Nuri Sahin showed his professionals what to do. The BVB coach took part in the final training session on Thursday at the DFB campus. Even though, at 36 years old, he can no longer keep up in all respects, he was able to show his team, in addition to his still fine technique, other attributes that had already distinguished him as a player. Attributes that his team has lost: fun and passion.
This team urgently needs looseness. But in this precarious situation, a firm hand is also needed that does not ignore the seriousness of the situation. Therefore, Sahin must keep his word and strictly enforce the “consequences” mentioned after the Kiel bankruptcy. Even if that would mean teaching the established forces a lesson. The only way out: rotation.
Even after the 3-2 defeat, Sahin criticized some of his players. But coaches and those responsible cannot take the players to court more clearly and harshly than after the embarrassment in Kiel. The leading players in particular, or those who have the right to be, are repeatedly counted out.
It almost seems as if the content of the many individual conversations in which the unfortunate situation was made clear went in one ear and out the other for many players.
It shows that words are apparently no longer enough. Sahin must follow up with action and put established forces on the bench! Even if that would mean that the individual quality on the pitch suffers.
Of course, a large-scale rotation represents a risk. In terms of quality, the established forces – in top form, mind you – are better than the second guard. Especially since no one from the second row was able to impose themselves sustainably.
-But it would be presumptuous to just hope that the leading players will bring their performance onto the pitch. Why should something suddenly work that has rarely worked in the previous 25 games under Sahin? Logically, this measure wouldn’t make him more popular with some players. But what use is sympathy when a club like Borussia Dortmund is teetering towards collapse?
A much more important signal would be a rotation with a view to the future – if, as the majority in the club recently emphasized again and again, the name is Nuri Sahin.
Sahin’s very clear announcements to his players must not remain empty words. Otherwise he runs the risk of making himself untrustworthy. The message to the players would be fatal: I can do whatever I want – I’ll still play.
Of course, there is a risk that some changes in the starting and regular lineup will go wrong. But that’s what it’s been like before – with established forces.
