after the failure of censorship, tensions between PS and LFI rise a notch

The president of the LFI group in the Assembly, Mathilde Panot, discusses with the socialist deputy, Arthur Delaporte, during the Prime Minister's general policy declaration, January 14, 2025. JULIEN MUGUET / JULIEN MUGUET FOR “THE WORLD”

“Not even bad. » This is how Luc Broussy, leader of the Socialist Party (PS), describes the impact of the reprisals planned by La insoumise (LFI) against those who do not vote for a motion of censure against François Bayrou. Thursday January 16, apart from eight of them, the socialists did not vote on the motion of censure tabled by LFI, the communists and the Ecologists, and rejected by the National Assembly. Here is the punishment cooked up by Jean-Luc Mélenchon: during the next legislative elections, invest “rebellious” candidates facing the PS deputies who did not want the fall of the government. “The PS fractures the NFP, but it capitulates alone”, wrote Jean-Luc Mélenchon on X. “By saving the government from censorship, the PS has become a substitute for Emmanuel Macron”according to Aurélien Le Coq, LFI deputy from the North. “The PS returns to the demons of the Hollande five-year term”added Manuel Bompard, coordinator of the movement. Behind the scenes, socialist leaders admit that they expected much worse.

“If we want to play down the drama, we will overcome”

Nothing is simple… Even if, within the NFP, the episode of this motion of blank censure, since it had no chance of being adopted without the vote of the National Rally, amplifies a trend: nothing goes further, once again, but perhaps one last time, between LFI, which continues to divide in all directions, and the PS, which has decided to emancipate itself from rebellious supervision. Does this mean that the NFP is, this time, on the verge of final dislocation? Or will the little refrain of the definitive divide evaporate immediately when the next legislative election comes around? According to an iconoclastic comparison by Pierre Jouvet, general secretary of the party, “ the breakup of the NFP is a bit like the death of Michel Drucker… We have announced it so many times.” Marine Tondelier, leader of environmentalists, believes that “if we want the NFP to explode, it will explode, but if we want to play it down, we will overcome”.
