Alpine skiing: Kriechmayr clinches victory in Super-G

Von Allmen, born and raised in the Bernese Oberland, caught the best line with start number three and relegated Kriechmayr to second place by 0.10 seconds in 1:47.65 minutes. The 23-year-old was able to celebrate his first World Cup victory after two second places in the downhill runs in Val Gardena and Bormio. Thanks to Stefan Rogentin, who had a serious fall in the first downhill training, third place also went to the Swiss hosts (+0.58 seconds). From the ÖSV’s perspective, Lukas Feurstein came back strongly after his metacarpal fracture with a tenth place (+1.32 seconds).

Even if, as in Bormio, he had to admit defeat to a first-time winner – before the turn of the year the Norwegian Fredrik Möller had spoiled his soup – Kriechmayr still smiled in the ORF interview. “It was a flawless ride. I’m happy, that’s the most important thing for me,” said the 33-year-old. The reason for the narrow deficit was quickly found: “Unfortunately, I went too far on a double left at the top, it’s soft there – I couldn’t get anything back from the ski and I really noticed how it took away my speed. The condition was obviously good downstairs. Overall it was a good performance.”

Premiere victory for Von Allmen

The 23-year-old local hero Franjo von Allmen joined the ranks of World Cup winners on the legendary Lauberhorn.

Defeat for Odermatt

However, World Cup leader Marco Odermatt suffered an unexpected defeat. The wearer of the red jersey lost 1.04 seconds to his compatriot and had to settle for seventh place immediately behind Mattia Casse from Italy (+0.92 seconds), winner of the Super-G in Val Gardena. Even the surprise man from Bormio, Möller, played no role in the fight for the day’s victory as 13th (+1.54 seconds). On Saturday (12.30 p.m., broadcast from 12.15 p.m., live on ORF1) there will be a chance for revenge for those defeated in the classic Lauberhorn descent.

In the descent with Hundschopf, Kernen-S and Hanneggschuss the remaining Austrians will also be able to attack again, because things only went according to plan to a limited extent. Stefan Babinsky, who was sixth last year, did not get past 15th place this time, 1.60 seconds behind, directly ahead of his teammate Daniel Hemetsberger (+1.62 seconds). Otmar Striedinger, who had the fastest time of all drivers in the first downhill training without any gate errors, lost 2.02 seconds to the best time in the Super-G.

Premiere at home

22 years after Bruno Kernen, the spotlight once again belonged to a man from the Bernese Oberland, von Allmen. “I don’t think it could be any nicer. “I’m really happy,” said the 23-year-old, who made it to the top step of the podium for the first time in just his tenth Super-G in the World Cup, of all places at home. Before that, a third place last January in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was von Allmen’s best placement in this discipline. For the Swiss it was their fifth victory in the seventh speed race this season and their second in a Super-G after Odermatt.

However, von Allmen did not want to be compared to the superstar in the Swiss team. “I want to make my own name. It’s nice when you’re compared to Marco Odermatt, but I want to go my own way,” said the premiere winner in the ORF interview and immediately sent a warning to the competition for the descent: “Tomorrow I want to have fun again. “It would be no surprise that the Swiss fans would also have this, as the previous three descents have all been prey to the Swiss.
