Lamine’s level makes Kiko Narváez doubt the comparison with Messi: “It is something that has not existed in history” |

With a goal and two assists and not counting his participation in the goals disallowed for offside, Lamine Yamal put in a new performance in FC Barcelona’s 5-1 victory against Betis. Flick’s men maintain the scoring euphoria of the European Super Cup and sign a second ‘little hand’ in just three days, with key participation from ’19’. A performance so meritorious, that it has even ignited the debate in ‘Carrusel Deportivo’, where it is discussed whether there have been precedents for an emergence like this in the elite of world football.

“The plus thing is that, at 17 years old, and I can get wet there, I have never seen the appearance of this kid in my life,” says Kiko Narváez. The former Atlético de Madrid player is clear that, if he were sports director, Lamine Yamal would be his chosen player to build a team around him. Narváez highlights that all the players in the debate over who is the best in the world are currently “close to 30 years old” and “are much more seasoned.” However, that only reinforces Lamine’s candidacy: “What makes it clear is that as he gains experience, he will be number 1 in the world by a long shot.”

The former player, after what he saw in the match against Betis, has no qualms in praising all the virtues demonstrated by the young 17-year-old player: “Aside from that, he handles absolutely everything. Having the reading of the game that he has, the right moment to play the ball, which never rushes, which has the personality to always want it, which unbalances, which assists… we are talking about the great appearance”.

The comparison when it comes to FC Barcelona players always ends up leading to the figure of Leo Messi, a debate that also extends to ‘Carrusel Deportivo’. “Not even Messi, as far as I remember,” says Narváez when comparing the social appearances of both of them in the football elite. “Now, the big question if you are a sports director is who you stay with, the 17-year-old Messi or the 17-year-old Lamine.”

The former Atlético de Madrid player points out that, in his opinion, he would “stay with Messi”, although he acknowledges that he is “getting ahead of events, because who knows where Lamine is going to end up.” For his part, Lluís Flaquer, narrator of FC Barcelona matches, maintains that line and assures: “No one is going to ask Lamine to have Lamine’s career, because the eight Ballon d’Ors are something else, but his appearance is something unprecedented.” Kiko Narváez therefore concludes: “We are talking about something that has not existed in history.”
