FCA worsens Union crisis
FC Bayern celebrated an easy home win at the end of the first half of the season in the Bundesliga. Thanks to the 5:0 (3:0) against relegation candidate TSG Hoffenheim, the Munich team goes into the second half of the season that starts on Friday with a four point lead over champions Bayer Leverkusen. Union coach Steffen Baumgart experienced a bitter home debut, the Berliners lost 0-2 (0-2) to FC Augsburg in a relegation battle.
In the race for a Champions League place, VfB Stuttgart celebrated an important 2-1 (0-1) home win against RB Leipzig. The Swabians are fifth in the table and are now only one point behind fourth-placed Leipzig.
Despite leading three times, Werder Bremen couldn’t get past 3:3 (1:1) against 1. FC Heidenheim at their home Weserstadion. Bottom club Bochum scored three important points against a direct competitor in a 1-0 (0-0) win against newly promoted FC St. Pauli in the early evening (go to the match report).
Double packer Sané ignites Bayern’s goal celebration against Hoffenheim
Led by double goalscorer Leroy Sané, FC Bayern kept champions Bayer Leverkusen at bay with a playfully easy goal gala. With the 5:0 (3:0) against the discouraged and powerless TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, the autumn champions maintained their lead of four points over the double winner from the Rhine.
Sané (7th/48th minute), Raphaël Guerreiro (12th), Harry Kane (26th) with the continuation of his impressive series of penalties and Serge Gnabry (66th) had the Munich fans repeatedly chanting championship chants.
In front of 75,000 fans in the Allianz Arena, the only question that arose early on was how much the star ensemble around Jamal Musiala, who returned as a late substitute, would win the first home game of the year. As coach Vincent Kompany warned before kick-off, his professionals used their chances more efficiently, unlike in the tough 1-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. However, Hoffenheim also made things extremely easy for the German record champions and remained winless in their ninth competitive game in a row.
-Sesko hits and flies: VfB Stuttgart wins against RB Leipzig
Thanks to a strong second half, runner-up VfB Stuttgart also won the second game of the new year and moved close to the Champions League places. The Swabians won 2-1 (0-1) against RB Leipzig and are now only one point behind fourth-placed Saxony, who lost two strikers due to sending off in the final phase.
The Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko also scored in the fifth league game in a row and gave RB the lead in the 10th minute. Winter purchase Jacob Bruun Larsen (50th) and Nick Woltemade (60th) turned the game in front of 57,500 fans with their goals in VfB’s favor. Shortly before the end, Leipzig’s Sesko (85th) and Loïs Openda (88th) each saw yellow-red and were therefore missing a game.
Heidenheim’s late equalizer: Torfest against Werder Bremen
Werder Bremen remains winless against 1. FC Heidenheim in the league. The Green-Whites couldn’t make it past 3-3 (1-1) in their home stadium because Leo Scienza equalized for the guests with a wonderful free kick in the fourth minute of stoppage time. This meant that Werder had to accept a setback in the fight for international places.
In front of 39,350 fans in the Weserstadion, the Austrian Marco Grüll looked like the match winner for the North Germans in a turbulent game. The summer newcomer scored twice (1st and 79th minute). Marvin Ducksch was also successful for coach Ole Werner’s team (56th). Jan Schöppner (30th) and Luca Kerber (61st) each scored the interim equalizer for Heidenheim, who never gave up. In the end, Scienza caused a big celebration in Heidenheim.
Union crisis continues with Baumgart: 0-2 against Augsburg
1. FC Union Berlin also lost the second competitive game under coach Baumgart without scoring their own goal and set a negative club record. The Berliners lost 0-2 (0-2) to FC Augsburg, who had previously been winless away from home, in their home stadium An der Alten Försterei.
The Berliners have been waiting for a threesome for ten Bundesliga games. This has only happened once before for the FCU: in the previous season, which almost ended in relegation. Alexis Claude-Maurice ensured the visitors’ victory in front of 21,560 fans with his brace (9th/30th minute) in the last game of the first half of the season.
This means that the hopes associated with Baumgart in the east of the capital have suffered a severe setback. Union is just ahead of the relegation region with 17 points. Offensively, the Berliners remain too harmless. Baumgart’s first competitive game in the Union coaching bench was lost on Saturday in Heidenheim (0-2).
