Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jégou, two rising pillars of the French XV, are back for the prestigious 6 Nations Tournament. But their selection is not without controversy: accused of rape, they will have to face not only their adversaries, but also the justice system, in full competition.
They thought they had turned the page, but the scandal is far from being closed. Last July, while the XV of France was touring South America, Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jégou were accused of gang rape in Mendoza, Argentina. And suffice to say that the woman at the origin of the accusations has plunged French rugby into turmoil.
However, due to lack of sufficient evidence, the two young rugby players finally returned to France in September, after obtaining authorization to leave Argentinian territory. Sometime later, on December 10, 2024, the storm definitely seemed to dissipate for themthe judge dismissing the case. A return to normal life for the two players? Not quite…
Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, the two rugby players will face justice again in the middle of the 6 Nations Tournament
Despite the tumult, the two hopes of the XV of France were recalled by Fabien Galthié to prepare for the 6 Nations Tournament. “Today, there is a dismissal of the case which was obvious and which is clear. So, from the moment there is a dismissal of the case, we consider that they are innocent”justified the coach of the Blues. This Wednesday, January 15, their return was confirmed among the list of 42 players preselected for the competition, which will begin on Friday, January 31 against Wales.
But their return to blue raises eyebrows. The plaintiff's lawyer, who had already promised to use all possible remedies to obtain justice, protests against this selection which she describes as “irresponsible decision” and deplores “a real insult to justice”. “They remain violent aggressors”she states bluntly. And the climate could become even more electric on February 10, the date on which the first appeal hearing is scheduled in Mendoza, in the middle of the Tournament.
