On Wednesday Viola Amherd surprisingly announced her resignation – she wants to resign from the Federal Council on March 31st. After 30 years of active politics, it was time for her to make room for someone “fresh”. Amherd finds the growing polarization and the spreading hatred in political discourse increasingly difficult, as she explains when asked. The increased enforcement of particular interests through the pure influence of power is also causing her problems.

She doesn’t have a successor ready yet. Although Mitte President Gerhard Pfister will lead the party until the end of June, The Federal Councilor believes that his replacement is possible. She informed Pfister immediately before the public announcement of her resignation.

The center notes the decision with regret, as it writes. The party would like to thank its Federal Councilor for her tireless commitment and great will to shape things. As Federal President and Head of the Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS), Amherd advocated for the interests of Switzerland and the population.

The party also praises Amherd for the successful procurement of new combat aircraft and air defense systems. The center also recognizes Amherd’s work during the Covid-19 pandemic. By deploying army members, they made an important contribution to overcoming the corona crisis.

Party President Gerhard Pfister said about his resignation: “The center would like to thank Viola Amherd for her tireless commitment, her great will to shape things and the high sense of responsibility with which she represented Switzerland as Federal President and fought for the interests of the population as Federal Councilor and head of the VBS. She deserves great respect and gratitude for this.”

Viola Amherd began her political career in 1993 in the Brig-Glis city council. From 2000 she was mayor for twelve years. In 2005 she replaced Jean-Michel Cina in the National Council. After her election to the Federal Council in 2018, she took over the DDPS.
