François Bayrou opts for a resumption without suspension of the latest reform

Ultimately, François Bayrou sticks to his initial idea. During his general policy statement, delivered on Tuesday, January 14, to the National Assembly, the Prime Minister announced that he wanted to resume the very controversial pension reform without suspending it. While the hypothesis of putting the law of April 14, 2023 on hold had recently emerged, this scenario has been abandoned.

The tenant of Matignon, however, wants the text to be reworked by the social partners – something he had already said, shortly after his appointment, on December 13, 2024. He gives them three months to reach a compromise, failing which the rules current conditions will continue to apply. Given the differences between the protagonists and the conditions set by the head of government, the outcome of the exercise appears very uncertain.

Proof of the importance he attaches to this issue, Mr. Bayrou devoted eight minutes to it in his speech, which lasted an hour and twenty-five minutes. “The first urgency is to answer the question of pensions, which (…) continues to plague our country”he said, referring to the law of April 14, 2023, which pushed back the legal age of departure to 64 years. The Prime Minister agrees that the subject should be postponed “under construction, (…) without any totem and without any taboo”. In other words, even the measure on 64 years, denounced by the unions, the left, the far right, certain centrist elected officials and a large part of the population, can be re-examined.
