Parcoursup: our advice for formulating work-study wishes

The work-study program, with its possibility of paying nothing during your studies, is sure to appeal to many students. But be careful, the procedure for registering on Parcoursup has particularities. As the wishes phase opens this Wednesday on the platform, Le Parisien Étudiant explains the procedure to follow.

First of all, it is possible to make 10 wishes for work-study training in addition to the 10 wishes under the status of student – instead of apprentice. As admission to work-study courses is conditional on signing a contract with a company, it is better to play it safe by completing all the requirements, including those in initial training.

For Alex Bonnel, head of the Educational Innovation Center of the National Association of Apprentices of (Anaf), “formulating wishes on both counts within the same school can, for example, show the establishment that you really want to to integrate it.

“Retained under reservation”

Another particularity of the work-study program on Parcoursup, the deadlines for validating wishes can vary according to each establishment, and go beyond March 13, the deadline of the platform calendar. Each training indicates the deadline for validating your wishes, so be sure to note them carefully.

The responses to the wishes provided also differ. The word “retained under reservation” means that you can be admitted if you find a company to accommodate you on a work-study basis. “The best thing is to start looking for a contract as early as possible, since signing it can take place at any time of the year, before the wishes are answered,” says Alex Bonnel.

Before refusing other offers, contact the establishment to find out if you will have a period of time to find a contract. “Some schools reserve the right not to keep young people, whom they would have accepted in the first instance, in the absence of an apprenticeship contract. Which sometimes leaves some without a solution at the start of the school year,” notes Alex Bonnel.

Pay attention to additional costs

It is also better to approach companies as soon as you become aware of the educational content of the schools being considered, in order to highlight in your application the skills that you will be able to acquire in class. If we know the alternating rhythm of the desired training (for example two weeks of courses and one week in the company, or three days of courses and two days in the company), it is also interesting to indicate this.

To choose the right establishment, it may be relevant to find out about its creation date. If it is very recent, the school may not have much data regarding the professional integration of its students. However, this information can constitute a good selection criterion.

Finally, find out about possible additional costs requested by certain private training courses (competition fees for example), which the student will have to pay out of their own pocket, with no reimbursement possible. Enough to avoid unpleasant surprises at the start of the school year.
