Sports editorial, Jan 15 (EFE).- The Portuguese Nuno Borges reached the third round of the Australian Open for the second consecutive year after beating the Australian Jordan Thompson in three sets (6-3, 6-2 and 6-4) and He became the opponent of the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, third seed, in the third round of the first Grand Slam of the course.
Alcaraz, who defeated the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (6-0, 6-1 and 6-4), already met the Portuguese in the Barcelona tournament, in 2023, and won 6-3 and 6-1.
Borges, 27 years old and ranked 33rd in the ATP rankings, won his first title on the circuit in 2024, in Bastad, in the only final he has played so far.
Nuno Borges has never made it past the round of 32 in a Grand Slam. He reached this round in the recent United States and Australian Opens, where he was surpassed, in both, by the Russian Daniil Medvedev.
