Rapid City mayor ‘grateful’ for Noem’s time in office

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun said he viewed the governor’s state of the state address as a farewell and that he is grateful for Noem’s service.

“She has been responsive to Rapid City, when I’ve reached out and had questions, her and her office, her team around her have been great to work with,” Salamun said, “That has been refreshing. I appreciate that … I look forward to that with Governor (Larry) Rhoden as well, we have a great relationship with him.”

Salamun is crediting Noem’s national profile and her decision to keep South Dakota open during the pandemic as contributing factors to growth across the state, including in Rapid City.

“South Dakota is on the map and a good reason for that is because of Governor Noem,” Salamun said. “We cannot deny her impact, you can’t deny her leading during difficult times. I think we watched that, those of us who were here watched that, and you know a lot of second guessing, everybody figuring out what’s going on, but you know she stayed true during that.”

Salamun said growth in the region has brought benefits like higher paying jobs and more businesses. He added the growth does, however, also come with its challenges, including rising housing costs. The mayor said leaders have been working to address those challenges.
