Air Algérie CEO announces major changes for 2025

During a press conference held in Algiers, the President and CEO of Air Algérie, Hamza Ben Hamouda, provided a detailed overview of the company's activities for the past year. Increase in the number of passengers, new domestic routes, acquisition of aircraft and training projects… the manager outlined the major achievements and future ambitions of a national carrier which wants to strengthen its position, despite the challenges of the air sector.

One of the main performance indicators highlighted by Hamza Benhamouda concerns the number of passengers transported in 2024. According to the CEO, Air Algérie recorded a 10% increase in traffic compared to the previous year. This figure testifies, according to him, to the newfound confidence travelers towards the company's services, after a difficult period marked by the pandemic and travel restrictions.

“We have managed to regain the trust of our customers, thanks to modernization efforts and continuous improvement of our services,” said Benhamouda. This increase is also explained by the strengthening of internal connections, a major strategic axis for Air Algérie. In 2024, the company has implemented 68 new domestic routesdont 44 to the south of the country et 24 northin order to better connect the different Algerian regions.

“The south of the country has always been a priority for us. We want every Algerian to be able to move easily within the territory, without obstacles or constraints,” said the CEO.

New planes to strengthen the fleet

One of the most anticipated announcements concerned the acquisition of new aircraft. Hamza Ben Hamouda confirmed that several units will join the Air Algérie fleet in the coming months. Although the exact number of aircraft and their models have not been revealed, the CEO insisted that this acquisition aims to modernize the fleet and to meet growing demand on domestic and international flights.

“Our objective is to remain competitive in the air market, while guaranteeing high standards of safety and comfort for our passengers. The new aircraft that we will receive will allow us to improve our performance and optimize our costs,” explained Ben Hamouda.

This modernization of the fleet is crucial for Air Algérie, which faces increased competition on the international market, particularly from large Gulf companies and European carriers.

International distinctions that restore credit

Air Algérie has not only strengthened its fleet and increased its flights. The company also received several international awards in 2024, welcoming its efforts in terms of security, reliability and quality of service. “These distinctions show that we are on the right track. They reward the work of our teams and the transformation underway within the company,” underlined the CEO.

According to Benhamouda, these international awards illustrate a change of mentality within Air Algérie. “We are building a new corporate culture, focused on excellence and customer satisfaction,” he added. However, the manager admitted that there is still a long way to go to reach the standards of major global companies. “We still need to improve several aspects of our operations, including flight punctuality and baggage management. These are sensitive points that we are currently working on,” he admitted.

A training academy to prepare for the future

Among the structuring projects announced by Hamza Benhamouda is the launch of the Algerian air academya training center intended to prepare future generations of professionals in the aviation sector. “We want to create a reference academy in North Africa, capable of training competent pilots, technicians and executives, adapted to the challenges of modern air transport,” explained the CEO.

This academy will offer advanced training programsbased on international standards, to ensure that Air Algérie employees have the best skills. “The future of air transport depends on innovation and training. We must invest in human capital to remain competitive,” insisted Ben Hamouda.

Challenges to overcome in 2025

Despite the progress made, Hamza Benhamouda recognized that major challenges are still waiting for Air Algérie. The question of the punctuality of flights remains a recurring problem, as does the customer satisfaction in terms of on-board services and baggage management.

“We have made a lot of progress, but there are still areas for improvement. Our goal is to achieve a high punctuality rate and reduce customer complaints,” he said. The leader also mentioned the financial challengesin a context where the global aviation sector is facing a cost inflation and to a high volatility in fuel prices.

“We must continue to optimize our operating costs while guaranteeing quality service. It’s a delicate balance, but we are working on it,” he concluded. With a positive balance sheet, ambitious projects and identified challenges, Air Algeria seems determined to continue its transformation. The receipt of new aircraft and the creation of the academy are all signals showing that the company wants to modernize and reposition itself as a key player on the African and international market.
