West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez has made it clear that the fans need to understand something very simple.
Edson Alvarez joined West Ham from Ajax in the summer of 2023 for around £34 million, but if we’re being honest, he has failed to live up to expectations at the London Stadium.
New Hammers boss Graham Potter seemed to drop a big hint that Alvarez will play a key role for him, when he constantly used him as his on-field messenger during our 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa.
The 27-year-old seemed like a great signing when he first arrived at the club, but he has since regressed.
Alvarez is extremely hot-headed, and his lack of discipline has cost us on numerous occasions in the past.
The Mexico international has received two red cards already this season, away at Liverpool in the Carabao Cup and at away at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
In 61 games for the Hammers, the midfielder has picked up a whopping 21 yellow cards as well!
It goes without saying that Alvarez must improve in many different departments.
Edson Alvarez makes heartfelt admission to West Ham fans
The Mexican seems to be built perfectly for the robust nature of Premier League football, on paper at least.
In order for him to succeed in Graham Potter’s side though, he will have to raise his levels massively.
-Alvarez has opened up on a potential reason why he has struggled this season.
The Hammers midfielder reminded everyone just how hard it is to bounce back from an injury like the one he sustained in the summer, when speaking with WHUFC.com:
“I went through the injury, which has really been more difficult than people can imagine. I have fought a lot against myself, against being able to get back to my best form.“
That’s a fair point from Alvarez.
However, it’s worth pointing out that returning from a hamstring injury would not have forced him to make two unbelievably stupid tackles that cost us so dearly this season.
He may well have found it hard to get back up to speed, but his decision making is something that shouldn’t be affected by his injury problems.
I want to see so much more from West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez over the next few months.
Seven months have now passed since he injured his hamstring – there really are no excuses for him anymore.
