Brazilian João Fonseca faces the Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the next phase of the Australian Open, after beating Russian Andrey Rublev, world number nine, in his debut.
Sonego, currently number 55 in the rankings, beat the Swiss Stan Wawrinka 3-1 (6/4, 5/7, 7/5 and 7/5), to advance to the Grand Slam and enter the Brazilian’s path.
This is not the first time the two have faced each other. In the first round of the ATP 250 in Bucharest, Romania, in April 2024, Fonseca prevailed and won 2-0 (7/6 (5) and 7/5).
Meet Lorenzo Sonego
The 29-year-old Italian Accumulates four ATP titles in his career: in 2019 at the ATP in Antalya, Turkey, in 2021 at the Sardinia Open, in Cagliari (ITA), in 2022 at the Moselle Open, in Metz (FRA), and in 2024 in Winston-Salem.
In 2020, Sonego surprised the tennis world by declaring Novak Djokovic, then leader of the rankings, third defeat of the season.
-In his career, the tennis player’s best results in Grand Slam singles are a fourth round at Roland Garros in 2020 and 2023 and at Wimbledon in 2021.
Outside the courts, Sonego also has a career as a singer and has already released three songs. According to him, the parallel career “is good to disconnect from tennis, to have something different”, he told the ATP website.
In football, Lorenzo Sonego is a Torino fan and has already declared himself a fan of Ronaldinho Gaúcho.
