Agadir: The capital of Amazigh culture
And how can this day go unnoticed and Agadir is the capital of Souss? The city was at the heart of the festivities. Al Amal Square welcomed thousands of visitors who came to watch a colorful spectacle. Traditional dance troupes, such as the Ahwach, offered captivating performances, accompanied by drums and ancestral songs.
Locals prepared typical dishes like “taglla,” a corn-based bread, often served with honey and argan oil. The city’s Amazigh Museum has held exhibitions highlighting local crafts, including silver jewelry and Berber carpets. The children participated in Tifinagh calligraphy workshops, reaffirming the importance of the Amazigh language.
Marrakech: A fusion of traditions
The ocher city, although cosmopolitan, did not fail to celebrate Yennayer with fervor. In homes, families gathered around a hearty meal including “rfissa” and “chicken couscous”, dishes often prepared with local ingredients to mark abundance. The evening continued with popular songs performed in improvised dance circles.
Tafraout: A party in the heart of the mountains
In this small town nestled at the foot of the Anti-Atlas, the Amazigh New Year has taken on a community dimension. The festivities began with a traditional procession where residents, dressed in embroidered costumes, paraded carrying baskets of offerings. The women of Tafraout prepared typical dishes based on amlou. Songs in Tifinagh resonated in the silence of the mountains, reaffirming the attachment to the Amazigh language. The evening concluded with a collective Ahwach under a starry sky.
-Rabat: An institutional celebration
In the administrative capital, the festivities took an official turn with events organized by cultural associations. The kick-off of the festivities celebrating the Amazigh New Year 2975 was given on Monday at the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM), under the theme “Yennayer, a lever for sustainable development”, in the presence of an audience personalities from various backgrounds.
These activities, which will continue until January 17, with the assistance of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, the Professional Association for Women’s Entrepreneurship (APPEF) and the Khairat Bladi Foundation Association, aim to highlight the ancestral history of Moroccan Amazigh civilization.
Conferences and round tables were organized to discuss the promotion of Amazigh culture in the Moroccan education system.
Nador: The cradle of Rif traditions
In the Rif region, Nador was the scene of grandiose festivities. The locals prepared “baddaz”, a dish made from barley flour, accompanied by local olive oil.
The neighborhoods were brought to life with concerts by local musicians playing traditional melodies on instruments such as the gaita. Children participated in traditional games, while elders shared stories around campfires.
