17 horses die in serious fire at breeding farm, owner sustains burns in attempt to save top animals (Waasmunster)

Waasmunster

In Waasmunster, a fire broke out last night around 1 am in the stable of a well-known horse breeder along the Lange Beulestraat. The fire must have been raging for a while, because when the owners noticed the fire, the flames were already flaring up. Seventeen horses did not survive the blaze.

The straw in the stable was an eager prey for the fire. In an attempt to save a number of top horses from the sea of fire, one of the owners suffered burns to his hands. Some animals out of a total of 25 could be saved, but unfortunately all help came too late for the rest. Seventeen horses did not survive the fire.

Water shortage

The fire brigade had their hands full fighting the fire. The structure of the semi-open stable made it difficult to extinguish the fire properly, and there was also a water shortage. That is why large water transport was started. Teams from all over the Waasland emergency response zone arrived on site with a lot of resources and men. Water was extracted from a large fish pond along the Neerstraat, about 3 kilometers away. Tankers drove back and forth from there with fire extinguishing water.

It took hours to extinguish the fire. The material damage is great, but the loss of the animals is a true disaster.
