12:17 CET – Despite being shocked in the first set by American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy (19), Novak Djokovic (37) has come through a stern test to win his first-round game 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. The Serbian is chasing an 11th title in Melbourne, and, of course, has Andy Murray in his corner this tournament.

11:40 CET – Nick Kyrgios’ (29) Australian Open return has ended in a whimper at the first hurdle, with the home hope losing in straight sets to Brit Jacob Fearnley (23) 7-6, 6-3, 7-6.

11:20 CET – Karolina Muchova (28) has started her Australian Open campaign in style with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Nadia Podorska (27), whilst it has been an interesting day for Grigor Dimitrov (33), who after his earlier game against Fabio Fognini (37) was cancelled due to withdrawal, the Bulgarian has been forced to retire through injury, allowing Francesco Passaro (24) to advance.

11:07 CET – It has been a simple Australian evening for third seed Carlos Alcaraz (21) as he starts his quest for a career slam with a 6-1, 7-5, 6-1 win over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko (24).

10:42 CET – Two more seeds have made their way into the next round with 22nd seed Felix Auger-Aliassime (24) needing four sets to beat Jan-Lennard Struff (34), whilst Sebastian Korda (24) – a seed higher than the Canadian, has also made it through to fight another day.

10:07 CET – Plenty of action still to come through the European morning, but it was a tough encounter for Britain’s 15th seed Jack Draper (23). He fought for four hours on the dot to see off Mariano Navone (23) of Argentina 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to advance.

Also through in five sets are Arthur Cazaux (22) and home favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis (28).

09:51 CET – Marta Kostyuk (22) – the 17th seed in the women’s draw – has had to fight hard against qualifier Nao Hibino (30) to progress into the second round.

The Ukranian battled back from a set down to win the contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

09:00 CET – More Aussie success in Melbourne, as Aleksander Vukic (28) has come through a five-setter against Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumher (32) 6-7(3), 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in just over three hours to give the crowd in the Kia Arena a lot to cheer about.

Expect plenty of noise in Rod Laver Arena soon as Novak Djokovic (37) is set to take to the court. The 10-time champion down under is taking on American teenager Nishesh Basavareddy (19). It is the pair’s first meeting together, and Basavreddy could provide some stiff competition for the Serbian, getting to the semi-finals in Auckland in his last tournament.

Follow that encounter with Flashscore.

08:14 CET – Jessica Pegula (30), the seventh seed and 2024 US Open finalist, is through to the second round in Melbourne after easing past Australian wildcard Maya Joint (18) 6-3, 6-0 in a little over an hour.

07:50 CET – Time for another shock in the women’s draw as world number 294 Belinda Bencic (27) has taken out seeded player and former grand slam winner Jelena Ostapenko (27) in straight sets. Bencic, who won the Olympic title in Tokyo, has been away from the tour due to giving birth, but she was in fine form against the Latvian, winning the contest 6-3, 7-6(6).

Meanwhile, more Australian success for the home crowd to cheer on as both Jordan Thompson (30) and wildcard Tristan Schoolkate (23) have both come through tests to advance. The latter, after seeing off Taro Daniel (31), now sets up a clash with Jannik Sinner (23).

07:34 CET – We have had our first five-setter of the day come to an end with Thaigo Seyboth Wild (24) and Fabian Marozsan (25) putting on a thriller in Melbourne. The pair battled for dead on four hours and it was the Hungarian Marozsan who was victorious, winning the encounter 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.

07:00 CET – World number one Jannik Sinner (23) has made it through to round two in Melbourne, but he was made to work hard by Chile’s Nicolas Jarry (29). The Italian won the first two sets in tie-breaks before breaking the spirit of Jarry and taking the win 7-6(2), 7-6(5), 6-1.

In the women’s draw, a shock of sorts with world number 78 Lucia Bronzetti (26) knocking out seeded Victoria Azarenka (35) – a two-time winner at the Australian Open.

6:36 CET – As ever at grand slams, there is plenty of interest in the home favourites, and it has been a good day so far for the Australians with James Duckworth (32) winning his first-round encounter against Dominic Stricker (22) in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.

Meanwhile, wildcard James McCabe (21) was also victorious as was Ajla Tomljanovic (31) and Talia Gibson (20).

5:45 CET – World number two Iga Swiatek (23) got the better of Katerina Siniakova (28) 6-3, 6-4 to progress to the next round. The Pole was made to work for it, as she was broken twice in the match. Yet, she played a solid match, winning 79% of her first serve points, and broke her opponent four times in five attempts. Swiatek’s next game will be against Rebecca Sramkova (28), who had knocked off Katie Volynets (23) in three sets.

3:55 CET – We have our first significant upset at this year’s Australian Open! Alex Michelsen (20) has toppled the number 11 seed Stefano Tsitsipas (26) 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. In what was a closely contested affair, it was Michelsen who played the big points better. He had break points in all four sets, converting five of his 12 opportunities. Next for the American is either James McCabe (21) or Martin Landaluce (19).

3:10 CET – Coco Gauff (20) had no issues in her first-round match as she topped her fellow countrywoman Sonia Kenin (26) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. While it was far from a perfect performance from the 2023 US Open champion – she had 32 unforced errors across the two sets – she won nearly half of the points on Kenin’s serve. Next up for Gauff is Brit Jodie Burrage (25), who knocked off Leolia Jeanjean (29) in her first-round encounter.
