SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) – A woman from New Boston has been arrested in connection with endangering children, according to Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman.
It all started on Friday just before 6:00 p.m. when Scioto County Children Services contacted the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and the New Boston Police Department requesting assistance.
Sheriff Thoroughman says the call came in that a 9-month-old was being taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for injuries which included broken bones, a black eye and other unexplained injuries. The baby was seen by a team of doctor’s on their child abuse team.
Sheriff Thoroughman says while detectives awaited the hospital’s report, they responded to the 3600 block of Rhodes Avenue in New Boston and met with the 9-month-old’s mother and others.
Once deputies received the hospital’s report on Saturday, they took the 9-month-old’s mother to the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office for further investigation.
Detectives interviewed individuals on scene and concluded their investigation at that location while awaiting the report from Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Detectives received the report on Saturday, January 11th, and responded back to 3621 Rhodes Ave. and transported the mother to the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office for further investigation.
Detectives were able to determine a time line of the injuries to the child. Sheriff Thoroughman says the oldest injury happened approximately 10 days ago and the most recent injury happened 4 days ago.
Throughout their investigation, detectives learned that the 9-month-old was seen earlier on Friday at King’s Daughter Medical Center. During that visit, the mother was given instructions to take the child straight to Nationwide Hospital, however that never happened.
Children Services were later contacted when the child never showed up to Nationwide Hospital. Sheriff Thoroughman says Children Services took the child to Southern Ohio Medical Center for treatment.
Two other children were removed from the residence as well, Sheriff Thoroughman says.
Sheriff Thoroughman says Kayla Siearra Williams, 30, has been arrested.
Williams has been charged with two counts of Endangering Children, a felony of the 2nd degree, and five counts of Endangering Children, a felony of the 3rd degree. Williams is currently being held in the Scioto County Jail on a $350,000.00 bond.
Siearra is expected to appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court on Monday, January 13, 2025.
This is still an ongoing investigation, anyone with information should contact Detective Sergeant Jodi Conkel @ 740-351-1091.
