Scioto County mother charged with child endangerment after infant hospitalized

NEW BOSTON, Ohio (WSYX) — A 9-month-old child was hospitalized with severe injuries, prompting the arrest of the child’s mother.

Kayla Williams, 30, of New Boston, Ohio, was arrested on Saturday on multiple charges of child endangerment.

Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman said his office was contacted by Scioto County Children Services and the New Boston Police Department on Friday, January 10. The call reported that the infant was being transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital with injuries including broken bones and a black eye.

Sheriff Thoroughman said the child was initially taken by ambulance to Southern Ohio Medical Center, but was being transferred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus for evaluation by a child abuse team.

Detectives responded to 3621 Rhodes Ave. in New Boston, where they interviewed Williams. They concluded the interview and waited for the report from Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

After receiving the report on Saturday, detectives returned to the residence and took Williams to the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office for further questioning.

The investigation revealed a timeline of injuries, with the oldest occurring approximately 10 days prior and the most recent four days ago. Detectives learned the child had been seen earlier on Friday at King’s Daughter Medical Center and was supposed to be taken directly to Nationwide Hospital.

However, the child never arrived, prompting Children Services to intervene and ensure the child received medical attention.

Two other children were also removed from the residence.

Williams faces two counts of endangering children, a second-degree felony, and five counts of endangering children, a third-degree felony. She is being held in the Scioto County Jail on a $350,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court on Monday, January 13, 2025.
