Iran announced the repatriation “in the coming hours” of one of its nationals detained in Italy

Tehran announced this Sunday that Mohammad Abedini – an Iranian arrested in December in Italy at the request of the United States – would return “in the coming hours”. This announcement follows a statement from the Italian Ministry of Justice expressing a request to revoke the arrest of this Italian, a few days after the release by the Iranian authorities of an Italian journalist detained in Tehran.

Mohammad Abedini, 38, will return to Tehran “in the coming hours,” said Mizan Online, the Iranian justice media outlet. “Thanks to the follow-up of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the negotiations between (…) the intelligence of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Italian intelligence services, the problem was resolved and led to his release and return,” Mizan Online said.

Suspected of having helped the Iranian army

Mohammad Abedini is accused by the United States of providing sophisticated drone navigation technology to the Iranian military, in violation of American sanctions against Iran. These components were then used during a drone strike in January on a Jordanian military base near the Syrian border that killed three American soldiers, according to American judicial authorities.
