Prime Minister François Bayrou continues to have a difficult start in Matignon, two days before his general policy speech, according to an Ipsos poll for La Tribune Dimanche.
A Prime Minister who fails to reverse the trend. Arriving at Matignon just over a month ago, François Bayrou only garners 20% favorable opinions among the French population, estimates an Ipsos/Cesi School of Engineering survey for La Tribune Dimanche published this Sunday, January 12.
For comparison, the predecessor of the president of Modem, Michel Barnier, received 34% favorable opinions and Gabriel Attal 37% after their arrival at the head of government.
In fact, François Bayrou had a difficult start to his first weeks as Prime Minister, between his return trip to Pau to chair the municipal council, in the midst of a crisis in Mayotte, and his comments in favor of multiple mandates.
Emmanuel Macron, for his part, is still in difficulty with only one in five French people (21%) saying they are satisfied with his political action.
A Retailleau, Darmanin, Valls/Dati podium
Within the government, the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau is doing well. For more than a third (35%) of respondents, the former senator LR is the best minister in the Bayrou government. More than one in six LR supporters (62%) share this opinion.
Appointed to the Barnier executive last September, he is one of the rare ministers to have retained his portfolio after the departure of the oldest Prime Minister in the history of the Fifth Republic.
Back in government since the arrival of François Bayrou at Matignon, Gérald Darmanin, in charge of Justice, also enjoys a good image, with 33% satisfied.
His rating even climbs to 49% favorable opinions among Renaissance-Modem-Horizons supporters, ahead of Bruno Retailleau (45%). After more than four years as Minister of the Interior (2020-2024), Gérald Darmanin remains a figure well identified by the French.
Manuel Valls, in charge of Overseas Territories, and Rachida Dati, of Culture, complete the podium, tied with only 18% positive opinions.
Terminal in difficulty
Former Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, on the other hand, has had a difficult start. Making her return to government after having left it less than a year earlier, the Minister of National Education does not excite the crowds, with 12% of favorable opinions. She is ranked sixth, after the Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu (14% favorable opinions).
Only the second woman in history to occupy the position of Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne remains identified with article 49.3 of the Constitution which she used in particular to have the unpopular pension reform adopted.
With four Prime Ministers in the space of a year, the Fifth Republic is currently experiencing unprecedented political instability, while François Bayrou will be expected on Tuesday January 14 for his general policy speech to Parliament.
