Australian Open Day 1 Betting Tips

L Fernandez vs Y Starodubtseva

11am AEDST

This is an interesting match-up slated for early on day 1 of the Australian Openwith Leylah Fernandez and Julia Starodubtseva one of the matches set to kick off the main draw.

Leylah Fernandez reached a peak ranking of 13 in the world back in 2022 as a 19 year old, though it hasn’t been completely smooth sailing for the Canadian since that career high. That being said, I have been encouraged by some of the tennis that she has produced to start the new season. I felt she ran Coco Gauff closer than the scoreline suggested at the United Cup, and in Adelaide she was undone by poor break point conversion against Alexandrova, who was let off the hook in a couple of key services games (end of first set, start of third set).

Yuliia Starodubtseva had a very impressive run in the later stages of 2024, including a Monastir quarter final as a qualifier, a Beijing quarter final as a qualifier (lost to Gauff in 3 sets), before struggling to the finish line with four consecutive losses. She has just the one match under her belt to start 2025, and it was a 3-6 0-2 retirement loss to Cristian. It’s hard to make too much of a case here for Starodubtseva. I will personally be taking the -5.5 games for Fernandez to kick off the tournament.

T Zidansek vs A Potapova

Approx 2pm AEDST

This is another match that I feel may end up being a little one sided, as qualifier Tamara Zidans takes on Anastasia Potapova for a place in the second round.

Zidansek did a terrific job in making it through qualifying last week, even though the hardcourt is not her preferred surface. It was not without its struggles in the final round though, as she faced 21 break points for the match (saving 14 of them) in a 6-3 5-7 6-3 win over Carole Monnet. She is a long way from her career high ranking of 22, which came in the year after her semi final appearance at Roland Garros. Ultimately, Zidansek is 2-8 against Top 150 players on hardcourt in the last 12 months, so she is certainly up against it today.

Anastasia Potapova is a little on the inconsistent side, however I don’t think this is the worst style of match-up for her to kick off her campaign. The Russian made a couple of semi finals in 2024, ending with a 19-15 record on hardcourt over the last 12 months, and 5-4 in grand slams. She is a disappointing 4-6 at the Australian Open in her career, however that includes two losses to Serena Williams, and losses to Madison Keys and Camila Giorgi in more hard hitting affairs. Today she should be able to dictate things a little more comfortably and consistently, as she looks to improve on a third round appearance in Brisbane.
