Los Angeles fires…new evacuation orders issued in several areas

Heba Press

After the strong winds that fueled the wildfires in Los Angeles calmed down yesterday evening, firefighters breathed a sigh of relief, but a noticeable change in the direction of the fire necessitated the issuance of new evacuation orders.

Los Angeles County is currently facing six simultaneous wildfires since last Tuesday, killing at least 11 people and destroying about ten thousand structures. These losses are expected to increase as inspections by firefighters resume when conditions permit.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the Palisades Fire on the city’s west side had changed direction, prompting an evacuation order covering much of the Brentwood neighborhood and the foothills of the San Fernando Valley.

The fire chief confirmed that the fire in Palisades increased in flames in the eastern part, and continued to move toward the northeast. Before the change, firefighters had made some progress in fighting the Palisades and Eaton fires in the city’s eastern areas.

Despite attempts to control the fires by hundreds of firefighters, the containment rate for the Palisades fire did not exceed 8% and the Eaton fire was 3%. The fires continue to sweep through vast areas of land estimated at about 35,000 acres, or two and a half times the area of Manhattan.
