Bayern against Gladbach: From a Waterloo and an early sending off

Only the game between Werder Bremen and FC Bayern occurred more frequently in the Bundesliga. A look back at the difficulties faced by Munich residents in Mönchengladbach in the recent past.

Mönchengladbach is not a popular destination for FC Bayern. In addition to Heidenheim, where he has only played once, and Frankfurt, FCB only has a negative away record against current Bundesliga teams against Borussia, having already lost 23 times there with 14 wins and 19 draws. Although Bayern won both duels last season, Borussia Park in particular has received some heavy claps in the recent past.

On the 15th matchday of the 2020/21 season, in the middle of the Corona winter, there was initially little to indicate a Bayern defeat on January 8, 2021. Hansi Flick’s team dominated, leading 2-0 after 26 minutes thanks to goals from Robert Lewandowski from the penalty spot and Leon Goretzka. Easy game? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that!

The last five Bayern guest games in Gladbach

At the half-time whistle, the outstanding Jonas Hofmann equalized with his second goal. Four minutes after the break, the national player – kicker grade 1 that evening – served Florian Neuhaus, who made it 3-2 in this ghost game. Afterwards, Bayern can’t think of much against the Borussia bulwark. However, they defend their lead in the table and become champions again in the end, while Mönchengladbach misses out on international business in 8th place.

Nagelsmann sees the score 0:5 on the couch

The reunion will take place in Borussia Park on the first matchday of the following season. Julian Nagelsmann sits on the Bayern bench in charge of the game for the first time in the Bundesliga and has to watch as Alassane Plea scores for the home team in the 10th minute. The next Bayern defeat? No, because Lewandowski equalized before the half-time whistle after a corner from Joshua Kimmich.

The man of the evening was Yann Sommer in the Borussia goal, who would move to Munich a good year later. The Swiss is there with his foot three times and prevents the score from 1:2. Things get heated in the final phase when Dayot Upamecano twice brings down Marcus Thuram for a penalty, but neither referee Marco Fritz (grade 5) nor the VAR intervene. It remains 1:1.

Just a few weeks later, on October 27, 2021, the Munich team will have to go back to Mönchengladbach in the DFB Cup and experience their proverbial Waterloo. Nagelsmann stays at home sick, is represented by Dino Toppmöller, and has to watch a 5-0 defeat at home. This title is gone early.

Manu Koné in the 2nd minute, Ramy Bensebaini in the 15th and after a foul by Lucas Hernandez in the 21st with a penalty made things clear early on. After halftime, Breel Embolo increased the score to 5-0 with a brace after just 57 minutes, a historic evening. FC Bayern have never lost more in this competition before, with no chance at all, they failed in the second round. Gladbach, on the other hand, is of no use in the euphoria, in the next round they end up 3-0 at second division Hannover.

Upamecano flies early, Tel hits late

The Munich team will make their next attempt in Borussia Park on February 18, 2023. But in the eighth minute, Upamecano was sent off far too harshly, and referee Tobias Welz (grade 5) decided on the emergency brake. Shortly afterwards, Lars Stindl brings joy to the home fans.

The Munich team equalized when they were outnumbered by Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, but after half-time Hofmann (grade 1), who was once again outstanding against Bayern, and Thuram ensured a two-goal lead against Sommer, Mathys, who was now in the Bayern goal Tel’s connection is late. Nagelsmann was released a few weeks later, but Bayern still became champions under successor Thomas Tuchel on the last matchday.

It was only last season, early on matchday 3, that the record champions once again had a sense of success in Mönchengladbach, but had to fight hard for it. Ko Itakura heads the score 1-0 against the guests after half an hour with Sven Ulreich in the goal. In the second half the game developed to one goal. Leroy Sané scored the deserved equalizer after just under an hour.

It wasn’t until the 87th minute that the late decision was made; it was a relief for Bayern. A Kimmich corner finds Tel, who heads it in unstoppable. The Tuchel team survives the eight-minute stoppage time unscathed.

And now when we meet again? It won’t be easy for Bayern this Saturday (6.30 p.m., LIVE! on kicker) against the recently strengthened Borussia. Upamecano is out through suspension, Jamal Musiala is ill. As is usually the case, Munich are the favorites, but the recent past has proven that anything can happen in this Bundesliga classic.
