As devastating fires continue to ravage Los Angeles, particularly affecting the neighborhoods of Pacific Palisades and Hollywood, American actress Jamie Lee Curtis announced a donation of one million dollars to support the victims.
The announcement was made official this Thursday, January 9 via her Instagram account, where she expressed her solidarity in the face of the disaster.
“As the fire continues to wreak havoc and the firefighters of California, Los Angeles and all the (organizations) that fight fires and save lives continue to work hard, may neighbors and friends stand together to saving each other, my husband, I and my children committed a million dollars from our family foundation, to start a fund of support for our beautiful city and our beautiful state, as well as for the people who live there and who like it”, she wrote.
The 66-year-old actress, herself forced to leave her home located in an evacuated area, also specified that she was collaborating with the authorities, including the mayor, the governor and a senator, to identify “where this money should be directed to have the greatest impact.”
The day before, during his appearance on the show The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in New York, Jamie Lee Curtis spoke with emotion of the seriousness of the situation in California.
“The place where I live is under fire. The whole Pacific Palisades neighborhood is burning,” she confided, her voice trembling. “Everything: the store I shop at, my children’s schools. Many, many, many of my friends have lost their homes. It’s a truly horrible situation.”
“All of Pacific Palisades looks like Gaza”
To date, approximately 2,000 buildings have been destroyed, and more than 130,000 people have been evacuated in the Los Angeles area. Among the affected residences are those of many celebrities, including Anthony Hopkins, Paris Hilton, Ben Affleck and Mark Hamill, who also had to leave their homes.
-However, Tony Curtis’ daughter sparked controversy at a recent screening of the film The Last Showgirlfor which Pamela Anderson was nominated for a Golden Globe.
In a Q&A after the film, Jamie Lee Curtis compared the destruction caused by the fire to that of the Gaza Strip being destroyed by the Israeli army, stating: “All of Pacific Palisades looks like Gaza, like these war-torn countries, where terrible things happened.”
These comments, considered shocking by many observers on the Web, even caused the astonishment of his on-screen partner, Pamela Anderson.
This statement also reignited a controversy from October 2023, when the actress deleted from her Instagram post a photo of injured children in Gaza that she had initially posted, wrongly thinking that they were young Israelis.
The reaction of Internet users was not long in coming: Jamie Lee Curtis suffered numerous criticisms on social networks, some accusing him of insensitivity and clumsiness in his comments.
