Bern riding school: fingers chopped off, police blocked

It was recently announced that the Bern riding school will remain closed until January 22nd. The Bern riding school is an autonomous cultural and meeting center; the facade is characterized by graffiti with some left-wing, communist and anarchist symbols.

According to the Bern cantonal police, on average there are at least five acts of violence per month in the riding school area.

The background to the temporary closure of the riding school could be a violent crime on December 29, 2024. Two days before New Year’s Eve, rival groups attacked each other on the square in front of the riding school, as “Schweiz aktuell” reports.

One of the people involved had his finger chopped off and the police seized a machete as part of their operation. A 25-year-old Algerian is said to have committed the crime.

The police wanted to help the victim with the severed finger, but were prevented from doing so. “It is important to us that we can do our work,” says Manuel Willi, head of the Bern Cantonal Police Regional Police.

When “Schweiz aktuell” later looked around on site, a small amount of heroin and knives were found on a suspect during a police check. It is said that police checks from the riding school are often disrupted.

Already on Wednesday, Bern Councilor Thomas Fuchs (SVP) said for 20 minutes that, in the opinion of the SVP City of Bern, the riding school should be closed permanently.

The leader of the SP parliamentary group, Barbara Keller, sees it completely differently. “The riding school is one of the few places in the city of Bern that still offers real freedom and where there is no pressure to consume,” she told 20 Minutes.
