It’s overflowing in , this Thursday, January 9. Hotel evacuated, cellars flooded… Floods have already caused some damage, notably in Ille-et-Vilaine, a department placed by Météo on orange alert.

But by Friday January 9 – at least, during the night – the weather will change: from snow is expected. “ A little snowy episode, very brief, is going to happen,” explains Stéven Tual, meteorologist at Temps Breton.

Snow from midnight

Next night, a disturbance will in fact slide from the Atlantic to Brittany and intrude into the cold air.

As a reminder, since the beginning of this year, cold air has settled over France, competing with mild air which then tries to rise. “Wednesday January 8, it was very mild in Brittany and today (Thursday January 9, editor’s note), it is cooler,” illustrates Stéven Tual.

During the night from Thursday to Friday, the rainy precipitation at the start of the night will increase and a physical phenomenon will take place: l’isothermie.

When the rain is sustained, the snow above the rain at altitude takes precedence. The rain-snow limit naturally drops until it definitively replaces the rain.

In other words, the snow will eventually overtake the rain in the sky. This episode will last “ between midnight and 7 a.m. – 10 a.m. maximum”.

Get up early

The snowy episode will not last very long. “Mild air will gradually gain altitude towards the north and after 7 a.m. – 10 a.m., the rain will eventually take over,” indicates the meteorologist.

To see snow, you will have to get up (very) early: it will only be present in the early morning. “ Between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.it will be visible,” specifies Stéven Tual.

Traffic difficulties?

Will there be traffic difficulties? According to the meteorologist’s forecasts, the snow is likely to melt as early as 8 a.m. However, be careful.

Between 2 and 5 cm of snow

In which areas of Brittany will there be snow when you wake up?

  • In the south of Côtes-d’Armor, “on the hills of Mené, in Center Armor, in Kreiz Breizh, Argoat, on the Monts d’Arrée”, says Stéven Tual, “there could be between 2 and 5 cm of snow to the strongest.”
  • North of Finistère, north of Ille-et-Vilaine and on the coastal part of the Côtes-d’Armorthere should be between 0 and 2 cm of snow.

“I’m taking a lot of precautions,” tempers the meteorologist, “but it’s possible that it could hold in these places.”

Unfortunately, the south of Brittany will not be affected by this brief snowy episode. “There is no chance of snow falling, because the mild air will gain altitude very quickly,” explains the meteorologist. “From Douarnenez to Châteaubriant, there is little chance of snow or at least of it holding. »

Friday, a cool and rainy day

Furthermore, Friday January 10 should not be “a very pleasant day”. “It will be cold throughout the day,” notes Stéven Tual.

He will do 12 degrees has Brest while on the side of Merdrignac (Côtes-d’Armor) it will make 2-3 degrees during the day and , 5 degrees.

The day will also be punctuated very widespread showers.

Between 15 and 30 mm of additional rain are expected and the situation will really get tense in Côtes-d’Armor, Morbihan and Ille-et-Vilaine which are already affected by flooding.

The sun returns on Sunday

Some good news, however: “the sun was missing: it will be there on Sunday,” smiles Stéven Tual. Except in the east where it will be gray, all of Brittany will be affected by sunny weather.

The sun should shine in the sky for a few more days – until Wednesday January 16. The time will be very dry. However, temperatures will drop, frosts will be present in the morning. Up to -2, even -3°C are expected early next week.
