If you think of tradition in alpine ski racing, you can’t avoid the Chuenisbärgli. Since the FIS World Cup was founded in 1967, Adelboden has been on the World Cup calendar without interruption. Only Wengen and Kitzbühel can claim that. The giant slalom is considered the most difficult in the entire World Cup.

The favorites

There is no way around Marco Odermatt in the giant slalom. The man from Nidwalden won the last three races in Adelboden in a dominant manner. After three failures in a row across the seasons, the 27-year-old impressively got back on the road to success with victories in Val d’Isère and Alta Badia. It is questionable whether someone on the Chuenisbärgli could be dangerous to him.

In slalom the tip is wider than in giant slalom. The five races so far have produced four different winners. Loïc Meillard is not one of them, but he has already climbed onto the podium four times and thanks to his consistency he will be starting with the red start number of the discipline leader.

Meillard’s biggest competitors in Adelboden are likely to come from the Norwegian camp. In addition to the two season winners Henrik Kristoffersen and Timon Haugan, Atle Lie McGrath in particular is in top form. The 24-year-old left Madonna di Campiglio on Wednesday with a clear lead and was second on the podium twice in Adelboden.

The most successful drivers

No one has won the Chuenisbärgli more often than Marcel Hirscher. The Salzburg native was on top of the podium in Adelboden a total of nine times. His five victories in slalom are also unmatched.

In the giant slalom, Ingemar Stenmark holds the record with five triumphs. Hirscher follows with four and a sextet with three victories: Hermann Maier, Benjamin Raich, Gustavo Thöni, Pirmin Zurbriggen as well as the still active Odermatt and Alexis Pinturault.

We will show the two Adelboden races live on SRF zwei and in the sports app as follows:

  • Saturday:
    Slalom
  • Sunday:
    Giant slalom

The first run starts at 10:30 a.m. and the second run starts at 1:30 p.m.

The most successful nations

Austria is by far the most successful nation in Adelboden. A total of 24 victories go to the Chuenisbärgli for Red-Weiss-Red.

The Austrians dominate the statistics, especially in the slalom. They won half of the 22 races held so far in the Adelboden Stangenwald. The second most successful nation in slalom is Norway with three wins. The Austrians are also at the top in the giant slalom with 13 triumphs.

The Swiss balance sheet

Odermatt has polished up Switzerland’s record on the Chuenisbärgli with his three successes in the last three years. There is still a big gap with Austria in the overall balance (13:24 wins). In the giant slalom, the Swiss-Ski athletes are hot on the heels of those from Team Austria. There are only two wins left to catch up with their big rivals.

The Swiss performance in the slalom is less good. With Daniel Yule (2020) and Marc Berthod (2007), only two locals were able to leave the competition behind. These are also the only Swiss podium places in the slalom.
