The Best, Worst and Most Oops Moments of the 2025 Golden Globes

The 2025 Golden Globes were full of tears, laughter and inspiring victories — as well as some moments that made us go “Huh??”

On Jan. 5, 2025, the industry’s A-list arrived at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, to award the best of the year in film and television, with Emilia Perez and Shōgun winning big and taking home four trophies.

They also granted us some best, worst and most WTF things to talk about, whether that be host Nikki Glaser’s risqué opening monologue, Timothée Chalamet’s polarizing facial hair or Vin Diesel’s apparent dig at Dwayne Johnson.

Read on for all the can’t miss highs and lows from the 2025 Golden Globes.

Best Recovery: Nikki Glaser Makes Us Forget Last Year’s Fiasco

After a badly-received Jo Koy monologue last year, Nikki Glaser came prepared and it paid off. She cracked joke after joke about all the stars in the room — and even those who weren’t present, including Ben Affleck.

“Tonight, we celebrate the best of film and hold space for television,” the comedian began. “Yes, Wicked, Queer, Nightbitch. These are not just words Ben Affleck yells after he orgasms.”

She also expressed her attraction to 2024’s hottest action star, Glen Powell, by congratulating him for a successful year where he was “in everything.”

Twisters, Hit Manmy head when I’m having sex with my boyfriend,” she listed. “Thank you so much for the assist. I’ll see you tonight.”

Other targets of her raunchy, very funny monologue included Nicole Kidman, Harrison Ford, Zendaya, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Benny Blanco and many more. The whole room was laughing (and blushing!).

Worst Cutaway: Sofia Vergara Is Not Karla Sofia Gascón

CBS

As Emilia Perez director Jacques Audiard thanked his film’s star, Karla Sofía Gascón, the camera cut to the audience to show an enraptured…Sofía Vergara. Oops! They’ve since corrected the cutaway in the clips online, but eagle-eyed viewers expressed their displeasure on social media.

Best Tearjerker: Demi Moore’s Inspiring (and Long-Awaited) Win

Demi Moore claimed her first major acting award for The Substancewinning best actress in a motion picture — musical or comedy. In her heartfelt acceptance speech, she expressed her “shock” and recalled a producer describing her as a “popcorn actress” 30 years ago.

“At that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have, that I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged,” she explained. “I bought in, and I believed that, and that corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it, maybe I was complete, maybe I’ve done what I was supposed to do.”

When The Substance script came to her, Moore said it was the universe telling her, “You’re not done.”

She closed her speech by imparting a key theme from the body horror film: “I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.’ And so today, I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me and for the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong.”

Most Pointless: Kylie Jenner’s Lipstick Touch-Up

Kylie Jenner got caught on camera reapplying her lipstick while her seatmates, boyfriend Timothée Chalamet and his costar Elle Fanning, chatted around her. But judging by all the on-camera canoodling Kylie and Timothée did, that reapplication didn’t last long.

Worst Night for Bald Spots

Seth Rogen and Catherine O’Hara.

CBS

Presenter Seth Rogen (along with much of social media) called out the Golden Globes’ odd camera angles, which caught people crawling back to their seats and, as Rogen joked, his bald spot.

He later joined Catherine O’Hara in an extended Canada-off about the Canadian films they supposedly starred in, such as an Alanis Morissette film and the “controversial” Gosling: The Ryan Gosling Unauthorized Biopic.

Rogen also lauded O’Hara for An Otter’s Tale“the story of a woman who rescued an otter’s cub and nursed it back to health with her own breastmilk.”

“That led to a lot of fun, very hard R-rated comedies,” O’Hara added as the two listed made-up pornographic films like Pipeline Polly, Log Riders, Sticky Syrup and The Moose Knuckle trilogy — which Rogen joked “swept” the fictional “Beavers” honors.

Best Yapping: Kieran Culkin Doesn’t Throw Away His Shot (from Mario Lopez)

After winning best performance by a male actor in a supporting role for A Real PainKieran Culkin took the stage a little tipsy. He admitted that he and his wife Jazz Charton took a shot with Mario Lopez prior to the ceremony and he was “definitely feeling it.”

“Whole speech is gone — terrific Kieran, you’re doing fine. I love the Golden Globes,” Culkin continued. “The first ever acknowledgment I got as an actor was a Golden Globe nomination when I was basically a kid, and that meant a lot so this has a special place.”

The Succession star said that now, the Globes were “the best date night” for him and his wife.

As his speech ran long, Culkin insisted on saying a few more “thank you”s before he could “piss off.”

Worst Night for Red Lipstick

Though the outfits were more conservative than usual, it was still a big night for nudes – when it comes to lipstick, that is. Practically everyone with the exception of Dakota Fanning forwent statement shades for subtle, “your lips but better” swipes. (Don’t believe us? Scroll through our arrivals gallery!)

Well, That Happened: Andrew Garfield Made Everyone Sweat by Adding One Accessory

Andrew Garfield and Kerry Washington.

CBS

While presenting best actress and best actor in a motion picture — musical or comedy with Kerry Washington, Andrew Garfield had viewers swooning when he put on a pair of reading glasses. The Spider-Man actor paired the glasses with a green Gucci suit with the top buttons undone, exposing his chest.

Social media users fawned over the moment, with one writing, “Breaking news: Andrew Garfield in his reading glasses just received a 55 minute standing ovation from me in my bedroom.”

Another wrote, “Andrew Garfield putting his glasses on with his unbuttoned shirt and his chain poking out jesus christ I’m dizzy.”

Best Mystery Bling: Zendaya’s (Confirmed!) Engagement Ring

When Zendaya hit the red carpet with a very suspicious looking ring on that finger, people began buzzing. When Bulgari sent a release for her jewelry that didn’t mention that particular ring, the buzz grew deafening. And by Monday morning, it was official: We have some serious bridal lewks in store, because Zendaya and her longtime love Tom Holland were engaged.

Best Reaction: Kathy Bates Rips Up Her Acceptance Speech

As Anna Sawai approached the stage to accept her award for best performance by a female actor in a television series — drama, Kathy Bates seemingly scrapped a planned acceptance speech. The Matlock star eyed the camera while jokingly ripping up a piece of paper.

Sawai (who, with her fellow Shōgun costars, nearly swept the drama categories) began her speech by giving the legendary actress a shout-out: “I have so much people to thank but I’m gonna keep it short. Thank you to the voters for voting for me even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day.”

Best Reminder: Karla Sofía Gascón's Powerful Closing Speech

Golden Globes

As Emilia Perez won its fourth Golden Globe of the night for best motion picture — musical or comedy, the film’s star Karla Sofía Gascón took the reins on the acceptance speech to deliver an empowering message. The transgender actress declared that “light always wins over darkness.”

“You can maybe put us in jail, you can beat us up, but you never can take away our soul, or our resistance, or our dignity,” she continued. “Raise your voice. I am who I am; know who you [are].”

Her costar Selena Gomez sobbed as Gascón made her powerful point.

Most Hmm…: Timothée's Mustache

CBS

Timothée Chalamet already knows his facial hair is not for everyone (he’s even joked that it’s a sign he “finally hit puberty”) and Glaser is definitely one of the unconverted; she joked that he had “the most beautiful eyelashes…on [his] upper lip.”

And though Chalamet also told Stephen Colbert he thinks his new look might qualify him to play “The Rock” down the road, presenter Dwayne Johnson isn’t sure his hair is ready for prime time, using his presenting banter to declare that Chalamet’s wigs in A Complete Unknown were made of his donated chest hair.

Worst Penmanship: Glenn Close’s Couture

Amy Sussman/Getty

If there was ever a case to keep cursive in the curriculum, last night’s fashion was it. Glenn Close’s hard-to-read Balmain design (it was a “love letter” from the label’s creative director Olivier Rousteing in his own handwriting) had us squinting and reaching for our readers to decipher the text. Maybe go with a classic sans serif the next time?

Best Glam Shortcut: Opera Gloves

For the newly engaged (Zendaya, Selena Gomez), their night was all about the nails. But for others (including Ariana Grande, Cristin Milioti and Pamela Anderson) we had to wonder whether they got to skip an hour in the salon thanks to their elbow-length accessories.

In actuality, their gloves were likely hiding a fresh paint job and flawless cuticles (at some point, everyone needs to be able to scroll through TikTok) but we don’t have the evidence. Sorry, mani cam, but looks like you’re going to have to stay in retirement.

Worst Idea We Maybe Can’t Resist: Trying to Copy Emma Stone’s Pixie Cut

Matt Winkelmeyer/WireImage

It looks so good on her! But unless we’re sure we are ready for our own “French new wave era,” we probably need to wait this one out!

Best Argument for the Weird Camera Angles: All the Backless Dresses

Another big style moment: Lots of deep cuts. Nicole Kidman, Kylie Jenner and Miley Cyrus were just a few of the stars who dared to go bare in plunging, backless gowns.

Most Why???: Not Airing Viola Davis and Ted Danson’s Speeches

Michael Buckner/GG2025/Penske Media via Getty; Gilbert Flores//GG2025/Penske Media via Getty

You’re going to award two national treasures known for great speeches with lifetime achievement honors…and then just not show us what they said? The Golden Globes gave Viola Davis (who won the Cecil B. DeMille Award) and Ted Danson (who took home the Carol Burnett award for his four decades of TV success) their own event on Jan. 3 to deliver their speeches — but we would have loved to see at least a highlight reel, perhaps at the expense of a couple minutes of presenter banter.

Well, That Happened: Demi Moore’s Massive Doll Collection Goes Primetime

Golden Globes

The Golden Globes shared lots of fun facts about the night’s presenters and winners (did you know Tim Burton gave Catherine O’Hara a private tour of the Vatican as a wedding gift? Or that Seth Rogan has a namesake octopus at the Vancouver aquarium?) but the one that really blew up our text chain was the information that Demi Moore has more than 2,000 dolls that have their own house on her property. Can we get a tour?

Best News: Big Jewels Are Back, Baby!

Michael Buckner/GG2025/Penske Media via Getty; Taylor Hill/FilmMagic; C Flanigan/imageSPACE/Shutterstock

After years of getting out the magnifying glass to ogle the most delicate, dainty jewelry around, we were delighted to see that giant earrings, showstopping collars and huge colorful gemstones were back in a big way. Salma Hayek (wearing Lorraine Schwartz), Kate Hudson and Rachel Brosnahan (in David Yurman) demonstrated this with mega pendants featuring colorful precious gems.
