The accident occurred around 10 a.m. on Monday, January 6. The victim would have crossed the tram tracks which were not a pedestrian crossing, at the start of the Mayou bridge, which leads to the Saint-Esprit district, just after the Bayonne town hall. We do not know the exact circumstances which led to the tragedy. The 59-year-old woman who lived in Bayonne died instantly. The driver of the tram'Bus (Txik-Txak), shocked, was taken care of by emergency services and hospitalized.
On site, traffic was blocked and regulated by the police. Only buses run. At midday, the intervention of the firefighters and that of the city's technical transport services was still underway.
The mayor of Bayonne, Jean-René Etchegarray, deplores this tragedy, indicating that, according to his information, the victim would have crossed at a place “reserved for trams, where bicycles can pass but pedestrians cannot”. “LThe cameras will undoubtedly allow us to know more about the circumstances of the tragedy”, he added.
The councilor also specifies that this dramatic accident is extremely rare and that it is the first since the developments which made it possible “a calming of traffic between the Saint-Esprit district and city hall”.
