The prefecture therefore attributes this to an important security system. “The effectiveness of this system made it possible to contain the violence, with stability in the number of vehicles burned compared to last year, with a slight drop in the Strasbourg Eurometropolis,” reported the prefect of Bas-Rhin , Jacques Witkowski in his press release.
The police made 51 arrests (compared to 28 last year), beyond the curfew established, mainly of minors numbering 22, for vehicle fires, mortar fire towards the police and trash fires. “There were no serious injuries to the internal security forces. Dozens of hearings are underway,” continues a judicial source.
According to our information, 65 vehicles were set on fire until six in the morning, in the same proportions as last year, and dozens of trash cans damaged in the Strasbourg metropolitan area. The prefect thanked all the forces mobilized during the night “for their professionalism, their great responsiveness and their commitment”.
A police officer slightly injured
The misuse of firecrackers and pyrotechnic items still left around fifteen people injured. A gendarme was also slightly injured following mortar fire.
In addition, around ten residential fires were caused by irresponsible behavior linked to urban violence.
1,900 vehicles sheltered
Compensatory parking and free security made it possible to secure around 1,900 vehicles in several districts of Strasbourg. “The unrest that persists every New Year’s Eve continues to concern us,” Jeanne Barseghian wrote in a press release. This violence is unacceptable. They encourage us to strengthen prevention and security efforts, but also to ask the courts to condemn these acts of violence against property and people. »
