Several communities have decided to cancel their New Year greeting ceremonies. Budgetary reasons are behind this choice, reports BFMTV.
Greeting ceremonies are traditional in municipalities and departments to celebrate the new year. But this year, several communities have decided to cancel their wishes due to uncertainty over public finances, reported BFMTV. The first community to have announced it is the Île-de-France region. Those close to the president, Valérie Pécresse, justified this choice by the need to “hunt down all savings”.
The region announced, in December, a strict budget, with 760 million euros in savings planned for 2025. The cost of a greeting ceremony, which welcomes between 1,500 and 2,000 people, is estimated at a little more than 100,000 euros.
Symbolic measures
The departments are also affected by this measure. Of the seven departments outside Paris, four announced that they were giving up organizing the ceremony: Seine-et-Marne, Val-d'Oise, Hauts-de-Seine and Yvelines. These last two departments would thus achieve savings of 250,000 euros. “This decision is part of a process of responsibility and control of public spending”explained the Hauts-de-Seine department at the beginning of December, relays The Parisian. The metropolis of Greater Paris also canceled its wishes.
-The mayor of Nogent-sur-Marne (Val-de-Marne) judged that the cancellation is above all symbolic. He launched “an appeal to the State” because, according to him, “the situation is no longer tenable” for local finances. The mayor of Évry-Courcouronnes, for his part, announced that there would be no ceremonies in 2025 and 2026. “This symbolic event was appreciated and friendly, but necessary to ensure the maintenance of public policies that are both useful and vital, guaranteeing social cohesion in the territory”explained the city.
