Amazon Web Services, Amazon's cloud subsidiary, said it was “delighted to work with EDF” from the media Next.Inkin reaction to an article in Chained Duck published on December 23. The latter claimed that the American company had ultimately refused to conclude a hosting contract with the energy company, “worth 860 million euros” pour “store information relating to the parts necessary for the operation of 56 reactors“.
It was in February 2024 that EDF declared that it had chosen AWS to manage part of its information system dedicated to the parts of its nuclear fleet. The objective is to digitize and save the references of power plant parts, so as to better manage the stock of available parts and thus streamline reactor maintenance.
Sensitive data remains in protected databases
Note that to modernize its IT, EDF called on several partners, including AWS. Also, the French company had specified that “confidential data on nuclear power plants“would not be hosted on the cloud but”remain in protected bases“.
According to the Chained Duckthe heart of the dispute is the possibility for the American authorities to access data stored by an American company, regardless of their location, under the CLOUD Act, in particular. However, according to a senior official quoted by the satirical newspaper, “Amazon simply refuses to write in black and white that it will not provide the data of its French customers to American intelligence services or the Department of Justice“. To which the American giant declared that “AWS is sovereign by design and all of our customers have always had complete control over where they locate their data and who can access it“.
Sovereign Cloud: Amazon takes a different path
Unlike its competitors who have chosen to forge partnerships with French suppliers, like Google with Thales, Amazon has launched its own cloud offering dedicated to sensitive sectors. It promises physical and logistical separation ensuring total protection of hosted data, according to the hyperscaler.
