As Manchester City sinks into crisis, with a draw conceded at home against Everton (1-1) on Thursday, Michael Owen tackled the Skyblues supporters. The former international criticizes them for having whistled at their team.
Whistles that don't pass for Michael Owen. The former England striker did not appreciate the behavior of Cityzens fans following their team's draw at home against Everton (1-1) on Thursday at the opening of Boxing Day in the Premier League. And he didn't fail to make it known.
“Wow! Manchester City fans booing their team at the end. Years and years of incredible success, witnessing the best football the world has ever seen. And when the team needs it most them…”, he lamented on his X account (formerly Twitter) shortly after the end of the meeting.
Quadruple title holders and winners of six of the last seven editions of the English championship, the Skyblues have filled their trophy cabinet in recent years, notably in 2023 during an exceptional season. They then won the English championship-cup double, won the Champions League for the first time in their history, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup. Since Pep Guardiola's arrival on the bench, they have also won the League Cup five times – including four in a row between 2018 and 2021 -, the Community Shield three times, and reached another Champions League final in 2021.
He predicted their descent into hell
But this season, at least this last month and a half, the Cityzens can no longer do it. Held in check this Thursday, the partners of Erling Haaland – who saw his penalty saved by Jordan Pickford – still have just one victory (for three draws and nine defeats) in their now thirteen last outings, in all competitions.
An unexpected descent into hell which had nevertheless been predicted by… Michael Owen last August. “The title is in Manchester City's hands, but I think they could stumble this year. They were very strong when they needed to be and they had an incredible run last year, but at some point they will end up failing,” the former Liverpool player said at the time. At issue: a potential end of cycle for the club, with also the possible consequences of the investigation concerning financial offenses, the verdict of which will be rendered in January. Only seventh in the championship, the Skyblues will have one last opportunity to end the crisis before 2025, Sunday on the Leicester pitch (3:30 p.m.).
