SNCF confirms suicide of train driver, cause of delays on Christmas Eve

The cause of the cascading train delays on Christmas Eve has been confirmed. The SNCF declared on Wednesday morning that these incidents were due to the suicide of a driver.

“SNCF regrets to confirm the death of a train driver yesterday evening (Tuesday evening) on the southeast high-speed line. He ended his life while the train was moving,” explains the railway company to Le Parisien. The prosecution had indicated earlier that a possible “act of suicide” by a train driver would be the cause of the disturbances.

“The entire railway family is in mourning and is very marked on this Christmas Day by this terrible tragedy,” writes the SNCF.

According to our information, the driver of a train jumped while moving, causing delays for around ten trains on New Year's Eve. His lifeless body was discovered two kilometers upstream of the train, which stopped in the middle of the railway tracks in the town of Crisenoy (Seine-et-).

“Automatic railway safety procedures ensured the train stopped,” added the prosecution. “The safety of train passengers was not threatened at any time, nor was the safety of traffic, the traffic management center having been immediately automatically alerted,” assures SNCF.

On Tuesday, Christmas Eve evening, around ten TGVs were delayed following a “personal accident”, affecting more than 3,000 travelers, the SNCF announced. Train traffic gradually resumed this Wednesday. “Some delays are still to be expected,” however, warned the SNCF. Some trains were up to 5 hours late, but none were canceled.
