“Joli pretty”, songs and feelings for Clara Luciani’s debut in the cinema

Clara Luciani convincing

“With Christophe, the songs are often integrated realistically into the story, almost like natural extensions of the dialogues. Here, it's the opposite. They become numbers in themselves, with more spectacular arrangements,” comments the melodist about this proposal which takes place in the 1970s and tells the thwarted love story between a penniless writer (William Lebghil) and a booming actress – Clara Luciani, convincing for her debut on the big screen. “Love story” where other intrigues are added relating to themes such as influence, hidden homosexuality or jealousy.

“In the studio, I always start from what the singers are. However, I do have a certain way of making French sound. This seems all the more important to me since this language is usually considered not very melodious. What was new here was writing the songs before even thinking about casting. This requires actors to adapt. I probably 'tortured' them a little more than in the past, but they were already all good basically,” relates Alex Beaupain, who was mainly inspired by classics from the MGM era, such as “Let’s sing in the rain.”

Fleeting pleasure

A positive momentum which makes up for the mistakes of this “Joli Jolie”, a charming film with a solid cast (José Garcia, Victor Belmondo, Vincent Dedienne and Grégoire Ludig answer the call) but which lacks depth, particularly in terms of its production. , to truly make an impression. A little ephemeral pleasure, in short.
