The Eiffel Tower in Paris was evacuated. A fire is said to have been discovered in an elevator shaft.
According to media reports, a fire apparently broke out in an elevator shaft between the first and second floors of the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Tuesday morning. The cause was an overheated cable and a short circuit occurred, reports the broadcaster France 3. The alarm was triggered around 10:50 a.m.
The famous building was evacuated, wrote French journalist Julien Tellier on the X platform. According to the Swiss news portal “Nau”, around 1,200 visitors were affected. Nothing is currently known about any injuries. The tower was closed.
With reference to the police, Tellier wrote that the fire had now been extinguished. The firefighters initially had difficulty getting to the source of the fire.
According to the Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE), the Eiffel Tower will “gradually” reopen its doors today, but only up to the second floor.
