How to Get Black Master Chief Fortnite Skin

Halo’s main hero has flirted with Fortnite on and off for years. However, the mighty soldier is still the topic of conversation in 2024, and, in particular, the existence of his Black Matte Master Chief Fortnite Skin is causing quite a stir.

Fortnite has been incredibly popular for many years, and one of the countless reasons can be attributed to its optional skins. Epic Games has kept things fresh by continually updating the free-to-play battle royale title with a slew of unbelievable crossovers and never-thought-possible opportunities.

From soccer’s Lionel Messi to Cyberpunk 2077, to the Skibidi Toilet meme—Fortnite has seen it all. Master Chief is one of the biggest gaming names to arrive in Fortnite. He originally debuted in 2020, and now he’s back—but there’s a teeny catch.

The original Black Matte Master Chief Skin isn’t unlockable anymore in Fortnite.

Fortnite’s official Status update account on X confirmed the news, and moving forward, it seems like Master Chief’s iconic green outfit is the only one available.

The Fortnite Status social media account said this on Dec. 24, 2024, “The Matte Black style for The Master Chief is no longer unlockable. This style is limited to players who purchased the outfit and played on an Xbox Series X|S prior to December 2024.”

Furthermore, if you own the skin, “Any purchases of the Master Chief made today can be returned without spending a Return Ticket.” This is presumably to make things a bit easier and speed up the process.

The change to the skin’s availability is the subject of controversy in the Fortnite community. The Dec. 11, 2020 post signaling the skin’s arrival clearly states, “Owners of the Master Chief Outfit! You’ll unlock the Matte Black style if you play a match on Xbox Series X|S at ANY point in the future. There is no time limit for unlocking the style.”

This is no longer the case. We’ll have to see if there’s any serious reaction and backlash from players regarding the news. Epic may add the Matte Black Master Chief Skin back into Fortnite—so keep checking back for new updates.
