This Tuesday morning, thick smoke emerged from a building located at 1 rue de la Pépinière, opposite the Cour de Rome in the Saint-Lazare station district (8th arrondissement). At 9:30 a.m., flames were still coming from the roof of the building. Firefighters intervened on site shortly after 9 a.m. to try to contain the fire but the intervention is not yet complete.
“Quite impressive flames are coming out of the roof. It smells like burnt everywhere in the neighborhood, and on the clothes. The firefighters arrived on site shortly after 9 a.m.,” observes Guy, 28, employed in finance and working very close to the scene of the fire.
A security perimeter has been installed around the firefighter intervention zone. Many firefighters on site are trying to put out the flames which are ravaging the 6th and 7th floor of the building. A command post was set up. A drone also flies over the scene.
In front of the security perimeter, many onlookers with phones in hand immortalize the scene. “It's ruining everything,” whispers one of them in front of the damage caused to the apartments, some of which we can imagine have already been completely eaten away.
Others exclaim at the tiles collapsing from the roof. “I was at the store and I started smelling smoke. It was 9:15 a.m. I went to see. Initially, there was a little smoke but it went away quite quickly, it quickly spread,” says an employee of a pastry shop.
According to the mayor (LR) of the 8th arrondissement, Jeanne D'Hauteserre, the fire broke out “under the roof, in a service room on the 7th floor”. The national police, municipal police, Paris firefighters as well as Enedis technicians are on site. “It’s a big fire,” said the mayor.
For the moment, no casualties have been reported. The fire has not yet been brought under control and firefighters are trying to get all the residents out. Access to the station is not restricted.
