“Provocation”, “bad Christmas present”, “far from the new world”… Political reactions after the Bayrou government’s announcement

After several weeks of consultations, the Bayrou government was unveiledMonday December 23, by the Secretary General of the Elysée, Alexis Kohler. François Bayrou says to himself “very proud” of his government team, “a collective of experience”.

Even before the government's announcement, Xavier Bertrand, president of the Hauts-de- region, various right-wing parties, reacted to X: “I refuse to participate in a French government formed with the approval of Marine Le Pen.”

“A casting of odds and ends”, believes the left

A declaration to which politicians from all sides have joined. The PS deputy, Aurélien Rousseau welcomes Xavier Bertrand's approach: “A very worrying sequence. Xavier Bertrand had the only dignified reaction to this subservience to the RN. We, social democrats, are fighting to build a path of collective responsibility. This evening, a serious signal is being sent.” Fabien Roussel, national secretary of the French Communist Party, believes that it is “a drop of dignity in this ocean of mediocrity”.

The head of the Ecologists, Marine Tondelier, declared, in turn: “It is common knowledge that we do not share the same political orientations with Xavier Bertrand, whose opposition I sit in the Hauts-de-France region… But there is a subject on which we have always found ourselves: the republican dam .”

Then the official government announcement came. Guest on franceinfo, Léa Balage, MP for and spokesperson for the Ecologists, declared: “It’s a bit like Marine Le Pen’s government. For the rule of law, this duo between Bruno Retailleau and Gérald Darmanin is a bit worrying.” The environmentalist MP concludes: “He did a casting of odds and ends (…)”.

“All this to keep his government going for a few weeks, a few months (…). It’s a bad Christmas present.”

“It’s not a government, it’s a provocation,” denounces on X the First Secretary of the PS Olivier Faure. “The extreme right in power under the surveillance of the extreme right”, he believes.

Place publique MEP, Raphaël Glucksmann, reacted on X: “Act 1: Xavier Bertrand is not appointed to the Justice Department because Marine Le Pen vetoes it. Act 2: Gérald Darmanin, who violently criticized the prosecution's indictment against her, is appointed to the Justice Department”details Raphaël Glucksmann. “When will they cease to be under the tutelage of Marine Le Pen?”adds the MEP.

On X, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the leader of the rebels, denounces “a new denial of the French vote negotiated under the control of Le Pen”. Mathilde Panot, head of the party's deputies, agrees: “A government full of people disowned at the polls and who contributed to sinking our country… with the support of Marine Le Pen and the RN.”This government has only one future: censorship. With the fall of Bayrou, King Macron will be naked. His departure is inevitable”, she concludes on X.

Guest on franceinfo, the LFI deputy for Seine-Saint-Denis, Eric Coquerel declared: “It’s the same policy as all previous governments. Emmanuel Macron insists, he doesn’t want to give up.” “I think about people”assures the deputy. “If we wanted to convince them that voting is useless, we wouldn't do it any other way. I'm going to send them the opposite message this evening: that they're counting on us not to let it happen.” According to Eric Coquerel, François Bayrou “won’t end the winter.”

Still on X, the national secretary of the PCF, Fabien Roussel, castigates “a 4th government still inspired by Emmanuel Macron, by the LR, by the RN and with Valls as a bonus”. “One day without end. We are far from the new world!”he adds.

“The coalition of failure”, for the National Rally

Discontent also on the side of the National Rally. Marine Le Pen believes that: “The French did not expect much from the appointment of a government which, like the previous one, relies on a manifest absence of legitimacy and an unobtainable majority.” She claims that the executive “will have to change method, listen and hear the oppositions to construct a budget which takes into account the choices expressed at the ballot box”. “While waiting for the alternation, we will be able to remind him that nothing can be done and decided behind the backs of eleven million French people”, concludes Marine Le Pen

Jordan Bardella, party president and MEP, said on X: “Fortunately, ridicule does not kill. Alas, nothing will have been spared for the French: François Bayrou has brought together the coalition of failure. In 2025, more than ever, the RN will be there to defend and protect our compatriots, in waiting for the change.”

“We have a cast that, to say the least, doesn't feel like it's new. If I wanted to be mean, I'd talk about Walking Dead,” declared, on franceinfo, the RN deputy for Bouches-du-Rhône, Franck Allisio, assuring that “this government is not co-produced”.

“Marine Le Pen does not participate in the composition of the government”.

He believes, however, that with Bruno Retailleau at the Ministry of the Interior and Gérald Darmanin at the Ministry of Justice: “On paper we say to ourselves that there is a shift towards something more solid.” “We will see the actions. On paper, we do not censor this government a priori”, he added, calling for “deeds and nothing but deeds”.

“François Bayrou has chosen to form a government with those who have ruined France for years. If he does not break with Macronism when presenting the budget, he will expose himself to censorship,” declares in turn Philippe Ballard, RN deputy for Oise.

“A government of heavyweights”, for the presidential majority

As Keeper of the Seals, Gérald Darmanin promises to “firmness”, of the “speed” and the “proximity”. “We have a government of heavyweights” reacted the deputy Ensemble pour la République des Karl Olive invited on franceinfo. “We have a balanced government this evening with ministers who embody and ministers who, for the large majority, have been attached to local functions, which will perhaps allow us to be a little less disconnected from the field”greets Karl Olive.

“This government will be seen through the prism of its results and nothing else”adds the MP for Yvelines. “I hope that the political parties will finally be responsible and that the country will be more important than the parties.” The Yvelines MP concludes: “The French want the country to move forward. It is indeed a parliamentary government. It is up to us to adapt to society.”
