Snow has been falling in abundance in Savoie and Haute-Savoie since the weekend of December 21 and 22, 2024. On this Monday, December 23, the two Savoyard departments are still placed on Orange alert for two phenomena: snow-ice, obviously, but also for the risk of avalanches.
Avalanche risk at 4/5
According to Météo France, the snow “holds on the ground from 300 to 400 m altitude, or even a little lower depending on the intensity of precipitation, particularly in the Grésivaudan valley this morning. We raise 2 cm to Bonneville in Haute-Savoie, 3 cm to Albertville, 6 cm to Annecy, up to ten cm in the Gex region at 500 m altitude. More generally, there is an average layer of 5 to 10 cm that falls overnight from an altitude of 500 m. »
Concerning the avalanche part, they are due to “remarkable and windy snowfall deposited on an unstabilized snow cover throughout the northern Alps. »
Weather experts add that “the accumulations of fresh snow in 24 hours reach around thirty centimeters from mid-mountains and 40 to 60 cm at high altitude, snow heavily blown by the wind. »
The prefecture of Savoy specifies the locations potentially affected by these avalanches: “Météo-France confirms that the high risk of avalanches in the Haute Tarentaise, Beaufortain, Vanoise and Maurienne massifs will continue throughout Monday. Avalanches may be triggered as snow falls during the night from Sunday to Monday then during the day on Monday. They will be able to reach exposed mountain roads as well as high-altitude infrastructures. Quantities of fresh snow should reach 40 to 60 cm from Sunday evening around 2000 meters above sea level, then an additional 20 to 40 cm are expected during the day on Monday. »
For Haute-Savoie, these are the sectors of Chablais, Aravis a you Mont Blanc who are concerned.
