Former Bordeaux and Rennes player, international goalkeeper Benoît Costil speaks before the duel of the two clubs in the Coupe de France on Sunday.
Sunday, during the last 32nd finals of the Coupe de France, there were some beautiful posters. Saint-Étienne will host Olympique Marseille, Paris-Saint-Germain will travel to Lens and Bordeaux will host Rennes. A final poster with a Ligue 1 flavor, even if the Girondins are no longer among the elite. A meeting that a certain Benoît Costil will follow with particular interest. The international goalkeeper (1 selection with the Blues on November 15, 2016) has indeed worn the colors of both clubs. He spent 6 years in Rennes and 5 in Gironde, also being captain there.
“For the supporters, it will reignite the flame even more”
“It’s a great poster, a big Ligue 1 poster to begin with. It will be played in a packed stadium (19,600 people), with a nice atmosphere which will reward the Girondins players for their good start to the season. For the supporters, it will reignite the flame even more,” notes Benoît Costil (37 years old) in Sud-Ouest. Seeing his two former clubs face to face is obviously very special for the goalkeeper currently without a club. “I have never hidden it, Rennes is my favorite club. I came back there, I will live there later. But contrary to what some people might imagine, I have a lot of affection for the Girondins. Despite what happened at the end, five years is not nothing. »
Costil: “I have a double feeling: anger and sadness for all the people affected”
Bordeaux is no longer in Ligue 1, nor even in Ligue 2. Faced with major financial problems, the Girondins have gone down as amateurs. “It’s a disaster,” says a disappointed man who played 437 professional matches. Afterwards, I wasn't surprised. I have a double feeling: anger and sadness for everyone affected. It does terrible damage, like our descent (in 2021-2022) has done damage. But I want to believe, I am even certain, that this club will return to its rightful place. It will take the necessary time but the Girondins will come back, I hope on healthy foundations, with people at their head like the club where I arrived, which had values. Bordeaux is not a club like any other. » Costil, whose last experience took place in Italy, at Salernitana, last season, has not yet retired after returning to his family. The goalkeeper is willing to return with the desire to “finish on a pitch”.
