The leaders of the National Rally rushed to denounce “Islamist barbarity” on Friday, December 20, on the evening of the fatal car-ramming attack in a Christmas market in northern Germany. But the first elements of the author's profile depict an anti-Islam activist close to the extreme right.
A car-ramming attack had just occurred this Friday, December 20 in a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, which Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella hastened to denounce in unison the responsibility of «l’islam radical». “Once again Islamist barbarism is sowing terror in the heart of Europe. This act of war against a symbol of our civilization raises hearts”hammered the head of the National Rally (RN) deputies on the social network X, shortly after the attack, which left at least 2 dead and 70 injured.
“The target of the attack owes nothing to chance: radical Islam is waging a war on our Christian traditions, on our identities, on our civilization”insisted in turn the president of the far-right party.
Both leaders would have been better advised to curb their obsessive eagerness. Because the first elements published by the German press on the profile of the suspect show that Taleb A, a 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia, is known on the contrary for his anti-Islam activism, a religion he had rejected before becoming atheist. In 2016, he founded a website intended to help ex-Muslims, particularly women, escape persecution in Gulf countries and seek asylum abroad. The person concerned, who accused Germany of wanting «islamiser l’Europe», displayed on social networks his ideological proximity to the German far-right party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).
The German counterparts of the RN, for their part, were less cautious. “The images from Magdeburg are shocking! My thoughts are with the bereaved and injured. When will this madness end?only questioned Alice Weidel, head of the AfD list in the next legislative elections, scheduled for February 23, without commenting on the nature of the attack. “Our thoughts and compassion are with the victims, the injured and their loved ones”also contented himself with writing about X Tino Chrupalla, the spokesperson for the German far-right party.
“My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We are at your side and alongside the people of Magdeburg”declared Socialist Chancellor Olaf Scholz this Saturday, denouncing an act «terrible» et «fou» at the scene of the attack, in the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt. Taleb A. was quickly arrested, but his motives are not yet clear.
