Expected for three years, season 2 of “Squid Game” only has seven episodes, while the first totaled nine.
After three years of waiting, Squid Game fans will finally be able to discover the sequel to the South Korean series. Broadcast for the first time at the end of 2021 on the platform, the first season met with unexpected success, becoming over the weeks the most viewed original program of all time on the streaming service.
Originally, no sequel to Squid Game was planned. But the show's popularity ultimately convinced creator Hwang Dong-hyeok to write and direct additional seasons. Season 2 can therefore be discovered this December 26 on Netflix, but with an unpleasant surprise for fans.
A shortened season 2, for good reasons
While the first season totaled nine episodes, the second only has seven. But fans can rest assured: this is a purely artistic decision, decided by the creator of the series himself. The latter has in fact decided to shoot seasons 2 and 3 of Squid Game simultaneously.
These two seasons were therefore imagined as the extension of a single story. And it is therefore the end of episode 7 which was judged by the South Korean director as the best suited to mark a break of several months. He also justified this during an interview given to Digital Spy :
“What I can tell you is that it's going to be good for you to take this short break and wait for season three, because I can say with certainty that it's definitely going to be worth the wait.” he declared in particular. Hwang Dong-hyeok therefore expects the end of season 2 “get angry” Squid Game fans.
However, they can console themselves with the idea of not having to wait three years to discover the end of the program. It has already been announced by Netflix that season 3, broadcast next year, will be the last. However, spin-offs could see the light of day on the platform, as well as an American remake supervised by David Fincher.
