Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan residents are bracing for a snowy and bitterly cold weekend as lake-effect snow continues today, followed by plunging temperatures into Saturday. Roads near Lake Huron, including U.S. Route 23, may experience slippery conditions as additional snowfall accumulates.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, steady snow will taper into lighter lake-effect bands this afternoon. Snow totals could reach up to three inches in areas closer to Lake Huron, such as Alpena and Alcona counties. Highs today will hover between 25 and 32 degrees before dropping to lows of 6 to 20 degrees tonight. Wind chills are expected to dip below zero in some areas.
Saturday will bring mostly sunny skies but a sharp drop in temperatures, with highs near 14 degrees and wind chills falling to minus 6 in Gaylord. Saturday night’s low could reach a frigid -10 degrees. Residents are urged to bundle up and limit outdoor exposure.
The sunny stretch will persist into Sunday, with highs reaching 21 degrees and calm winds, offering a temporary reprieve. However, another system is expected Monday, bringing more snow and highs near 30 degrees. Drivers should prepare for potentially hazardous conditions early in the week, particularly along northern routes.
As the holidays approach, ensure vehicles are equipped with winter safety kits and keep an eye on updates from the National Weather Service for evolving forecasts. Spotter activation is not anticipated for now.
