Winter Weather Advisory

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A newly issued Winter Weather Advisory from the NWS calls attention to some slick travel Friday night-Saturday morning. The time period for melting snow to change to sticking snow will come as the sun sets on Friday.

It has been a week since our last snow. Recall how that quick shot of snow coated above ground level surfaces while melting on paved surfaces. So, with a new shot of wet snow ticketed for the region by Friday night, the burning question is will snow finally stick to sidewalks and roads and make travel slick? While roads can get slick even when melting snow is expected ( a slushy coating can be slippery to travel/brake/walk upon). The formation of ice on bridges, steps and roads will wait for sub-freezing air late Friday night and Saturday morning. Snow accumulations will disappoint winter weather lovers with most only seeing a dusting to 1”.

Tonight is rain and snow free with lows by dawn near 32. Black ice seems a remote possibility from leftover water. Friday will remain mainly cloudy with showers of rain and melting snow by day. Highs will crest near 40. Friday night wet snow showers will coat elevated surfaces before midnight but wait for late night to whiten the ground level. Watch for slick travel especially late. Low 28.

Saturday will remain mostly cloudy with a blustery wind adding a harsh windchill. Highs near 32 but the chill factor will be in 20s all day long.

Sunday will start with lows in the upper teens, except close to 10 degrees where snow remains on the ground. That frigid and frosty start will give way to a blue sky but cold day with highs near 32.

Next week will see a daily warm up with highs making the 40s on Monday the 50s starting Tuesday thru Christmas day.
