Inter-Udinese 2-0, goals from Arnautovic and Asllani

December 19, 2024 (changed at 11.52pm) – MILANO

Braving the rain and coming out soaked and cold, but happy. Inter scores two goals against Udinese under the rain and advances to the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup, where they will challenge Lazio at home. The Friulians last half an hour, enough time to give the Nerazzurri a shock with Ekkelenkamp and then end up sucked into a black hole of errors. The goals of Arnautovic and Asllani decide, doing well to sting Piana – 21 years old, making his first appearance with Udinese at La Scala – with an Olympic goal from a corner. The last one was scored by Calhanoglu.

This time the cold really bites. Inzaghi appears on the sideline with a Pagliuca hat and his jacket pulled up. There are nine changes compared to the match against Lazio, from Martinez – calm and serene on his debut – to the Taremi-Arnautovic tandem, but the one who takes the spotlight is the boy with the 21. Asllani, in his third start of the season, takes the dress of the playmaker and manages the entire midfield. The manifesto of his match is revealed after just five minutes, when he serves Arnautovic with a precise through ball. A thirty meter pass that puts the Austrian number 8 on goal, good at returning but not so good at kicking. Massimi first awards the penalty for a touch of Kabasele’s arm (high, but not very high), then takes it away after the VAR check. The advantage, however, is a question of pace. Udinese stings especially on the right, where Modesto sneaks past a couple of times, but suffers in the middle. In fact, on the half hour mark, Ekkelenkamp missed a pass in midfield and gave the ball to Taremi, who did well to see Arnautovic cut past the inattentive Bijol and Karlstrom. Marko’s goal, back in the net after seventy days of darkness, is an easy left-footed shot into the corner. The last one was achieved in October against Red Star.

OLYMPIC GOAL

The rest of the race is pure management. The second goal came at the end of the first half, after ten minutes of fear due to a fan falling ill, saved by the defibrillator and the San Siro doctors. In the 45th minute, immediately after the restart, Asllani scored an Olympic goal to make Inter history. The last one was made by Calhanoglu in 2021, at the Olimpico against Roma. Before that Eriksen, Recoba and Stankovic. San Siro hadn’t seen one since Chino’s 2007 victory against Empoli. Asllani left the pitch after an hour to the applause of San Siro, before a sensational post from Taremi 10′ from the end. The Iranian played the usual double-sided game: good as a finisher, with an assist for Arnautovic, imprecise when it comes to getting his claws out. He hasn’t scored since Inter-Stella Rossa in mid-October. He still lacks his first goal from open play. Indications on the second lines, however: Carlos Augusto did well, an attentive and reliable joker, and Martinez equally well in the setting phase (plus a save at the end). So so Frattesi and Lautaro, guilty of having devoured the 3-0 three minutes from time. Two pieces of news: the debut among the professionals of Mike Aidoo, 19 years old, Primavera full-back, and the fifteenth minute of Tomas Palacios, the boy from Pampa who arrived in the summer. He took Bastoni’s place on the left and tried a couple of outings. The blue player finished the match with 77 touches in 75 minutes. Tomas has sorted about ten of them. There’s a long way to go.
