Keira Knightley (Love Actually): this cult scene from the famous feature film that she hated to shoot!

An essential figure in cinema, Keira Knightley has distinguished herself in multiple notable works such as Love Actually broadcast this Thursday, December 19, 2024 on the first channel. The work of Richard Curtis unveiled 11 years ago honors beautiful love stories during the Christmas period. On screen, the wife of James Righton embodies the character of Juliet who has the merit of making the heart of Mark, played by Andrew Lincoln. In one sequence, the person who is none other than his other half’s best friend even arrives in front of her house to declare his love for her with a bold sign just a few days after their wedding.

However, this romantic scene that has become legendary over the years was difficult for Keira Knightley to film. “I remember Richard (Curtis, the director) saying to me, while we were shooting the scene: ‘No, you’re looking at Andrew like he’s creepy.’ And I told him that the scene was indeed gloomy“, confided in all sincerity the 39-year-old actress during an interview with Los Angeles Times. Having spontaneously displayed a pout of disgust in front of the camera, the bubbly brunette had then had to play it again, much to his chagrin.

On the film set, the uneasiness was easily perceptible for a very special reason. Remember that at the time, the actress was still a minor while her on-screen partner was approaching thirty. “We agree that this scene was already awkward, right?“, added the happy mother of two children. “I knew I was 17. But I feel like people realized my age during this movie only very recently“. A late realization which nevertheless comforts her.

“Don’t you think we’re bordering on harassment here?”

I remember the slightly stalkerish aspect of the scene. I remember Richard Curtis (the director), who is now a dear friend of mine, saw me doing the sequence and said to me: ‘No, you’re looking at Lincoln like he’s scary’ and I told him I replied ‘But it’s quite scary.’ So I had to redo it to correct my face so I didn’t look scared“, revealed the star. This passage also seems to have left a bitter taste in Andrew Lincoln. Eight years ago, Gael Anderson’s husband did not fail to criticize his character.

I asked Richard Curtis the question during filming: ‘Don’t you think we’re bordering on harassment here?’ And he said, ‘Not if you’re the one doing the scene.’“, underlined the father of the family, pointing his behavior (although fictional) quite problematic. A time surprised by the critics, the director Richard Curtis nevertheless ended up recognizing his clumsiness. “He shows up in front of his best friend’s house, to tell his best friend’s wife, despite the slim probability that it will be her who opens the door, that he loves her. It’s actually a bit strange.”he emphasized to the teams of The Independent in November 2023.
