Geneviève Darrieussecq – Mayotte: shortages and risk of epidemics in replay

The guest on December 19 is in the air with Geneviève Darrieussecq, resigning Minister of Health and Access to Care.

Today, President Macron arrived in Mayotte, a few days after the passage of Cyclone Chido which devastated the island. The hospital has been damaged, residents lack everything, including drinking water, and the risk of cholera is now a reality, even if “no cases” have yet been reported. Today, the delivery of 10,000 doses of cholera vaccine was announced. The provisional human toll is 31 dead, but the prefect has already said that he expected “several hundred deaths”. According to Mayotte MP Estelle Youssouffa, the slums of Mayotte are now “mass graves”. Five days after Cyclone Chido hit the Mayotte archipelago, hundreds of people still have not heard from them. In particular, telecommunications are difficult. Emmanuel Macron announced today a “national mourning for this Monday, December 23”.

According to François Bayrou, new Prime Minister, has just experienced the “most serious disaster in French history” in Mayotte. Six days after his appointment, a government is still awaited. Geneviève Darrieussecq, resigning Minister of Health, and from Modem, is close to François Bayrou, who launched her into politics. “He might be a little stubborn […] but he listens,” she said about François Bayrou on France Bleu.

Geneviève Darrieussecq, resigning Minister of Health and Access to Care, is our guest. She will return to the management of the crisis in Mayotte by the French authorities. She, who participates in the crisis unit, will explain to us what emergencies need to be resolved, and how the hospital works. Close to François Bayrou, she will also look back on her beginnings at Matignon, as well as on her desire or not to stay in government to manage the numerous files pending on her desk. From the end of life, to the shortage of beds and doctors in emergency rooms, she admitted wanting to continue her mission in a ministry “lacking stability”…
