Starlink begins steps to establish itself in Morocco

The SpaceX subsidiary is beginning administrative procedures to enter the Moroccan market, with the ambition of providing satellite Internet coverage, particularly in remote areas.

Starlink, the satellite Internet access solution developed by SpaceX, is not yet operational in Morocco. However, administrative procedures have been initiated for the creation of a subsidiary in Casablanca, demonstrating the company’s interest in the Moroccan market. The National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) remains, for the moment, the only entity authorized to grant the necessary licenses to allow the operation of these services. According to sources close to the matter, discussions between SpaceX and the ANRT are progressing, but no official authorization has yet been issued.

ANRT plans to issue these licenses from 2025, potentially ushering in a new era of connectivity for remote areas. Starlink relies on a constellation of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites, providing fast and reliable coverage. This technology is particularly suitable for areas where traditional networks, such as fiber optic or 4G/5G, are difficult to deploy due to high costs or geographic constraints.

Major opportunities, but challenges to overcome

By positioning itself on the Moroccan market, Starlink aims to provide high-speed Internet access in landlocked regions, such as the Atlas Mountains or the vast desert territories of the South. This progress will help reduce the digital divide and promote the inclusion of rural populations in the national digital ecosystem.

However, the costs of accessing the service remain a major challenge. With initial equipment estimated at around 6,500 dirhams and a monthly subscription of around 1,100 dirhams, the service could remain out of reach for a significant part of the population.

On a technological level, the massive installation of satellites in low orbit raises concerns, particularly in terms of interference management.

It should be noted that OneWeb, like Starlink, is closely interested in the Moroccan market and plans to deploy its services in the country from 2025. Although Starlink is already well advanced in its deployment around the world, OneWeb stands out by its partnership strategy with local players to facilitate the integration of its services into existing infrastructures.

A gradual expansion in Africa

Starlink is accelerating its rollout across Africa, with ambitious plans to expand high-speed internet access across the continent. Several countries, such as Nigeria, Kenya, Benin and Rwanda, are already benefiting from this technology, while others, such as Liberia, have signed recent agreements.
